Figures from <strong>the</strong> Central Bureau of Statistics show that <strong>in</strong> 1994 (October), <strong>the</strong> number of students <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

amounted to approximately 170000, of which 46% were registered at <strong>the</strong> universities. About 90% of <strong>the</strong> student populati<strong>on</strong><br />

were enrolled <strong>in</strong> public <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong>. Approximately 8300 (5%) were citizens of o<strong>the</strong>r countries. Of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

approximately 2200 (27%) came from EU Member States. The number of students from EU countries <strong>in</strong>creased after 1992<br />

with <strong>the</strong> entry of EEA countries <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Erasmus programme.<br />

I.3. Organisati<strong>on</strong> of course of study<br />

The academic year at <strong>the</strong> universities, university colleges and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> college sector is normally divided <strong>in</strong>to two semesters.<br />

These are:<br />

• <strong>the</strong> autumn semester from mid-August to mid-December; and<br />

• <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g semester from mid-January to mid-June.<br />

The m<strong>on</strong>ths of November-December and May-June are exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

periods.<br />

Except for some newly developed programmes <strong>in</strong> English, all <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> is given <strong>in</strong> Norwegian.<br />

N<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Most courses are geared towards specific professi<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong>ir graduates becom<strong>in</strong>g professi<strong>on</strong>al or para-professi<strong>on</strong>al pers<strong>on</strong>nel <strong>in</strong><br />

areas such as school teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> pre-schools and at <strong>the</strong> compulsory school level, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, social work, adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omics, computer science, health professi<strong>on</strong>s, library sciences and journalism.<br />

The form of teach<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> structure of <strong>the</strong> study programme and exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s vary from <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> and from<br />

course to course.<br />

University higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Studies generally beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> August. However, certa<strong>in</strong> programmes allow students to start both <strong>in</strong> August and January, while<br />

some <strong>on</strong>ly start <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g semester. Specific <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> may be obta<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s.
