II.1.2. Structure and durati<strong>on</strong> of studies<br />

Diplom degree courses are divided <strong>in</strong>to two phases: a period of basic studies (Grundstudium) followed by advanced studies<br />

(Hauptstudium). Basic studies are generally c<strong>on</strong>cluded with an <strong>in</strong>termediate exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Zwischenprüfung or Diplom-<br />

Vorprüfung), and advanced studies with <strong>the</strong> Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. The durati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> various study phases depends <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

course and type of higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> questi<strong>on</strong> and is laid down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s. In accordance with<br />

<strong>the</strong> general provisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is, as a rule, c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e block<br />

<strong>on</strong>ce classes held for <strong>the</strong> first stage of <strong>the</strong> degree programme (basic studies) have been completed; and <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

which toge<strong>the</strong>r c<strong>on</strong>stitute <strong>the</strong> Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> are c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e block <strong>on</strong>ce classes and courses <strong>in</strong> stage two of <strong>the</strong><br />

degree programme (advanced studies) have been completed. The regi<strong>on</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s may, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

framework regulati<strong>on</strong>s, provide for divisi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>to separate<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> secti<strong>on</strong>s. Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e particular subject can be taken parallel to study, i.e. brought forward (vorgezogene<br />

Fachprüfungen) before <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> periods stipulated for each subject <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework regulati<strong>on</strong>s, if <strong>the</strong> curriculum<br />

relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> basic or advanced studies for that exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> subject has already been covered. However, <strong>on</strong>ly a m<strong>in</strong>ority of<br />

candidates should be allowed to take such degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s early.<br />

The regi<strong>on</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s may, <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> framework regulati<strong>on</strong>s, allow exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s to be<br />

substituted by coursework, <strong>in</strong>sofar as <strong>the</strong> two are judged equivalent <strong>in</strong> terms of exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> requirements and procedure<br />

(prüfungsrelevante Studienleistungen). However, <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s which toge<strong>the</strong>r c<strong>on</strong>stitute <strong>the</strong> Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> cannot<br />

be entirely replaced by coursework.<br />

Studies to acquire a Diplom degree at universities and equivalent <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong> last accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> study<br />

course, 8 to 10 semesters as a rule, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> periods of <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. Practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (Fachpraktika) of up to 26<br />

weeks’ durati<strong>on</strong> is required for some degree programmes. These practicals must be completed dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> breaks between<br />

semesters, and <strong>in</strong> some cases also before start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> degree programmes.<br />

The standard period of studies at Fachhochschulen lasts eight semesters, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical and <strong>on</strong>e or two practical<br />

semesters as well as <strong>the</strong> Diplom <strong>the</strong>sis and <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> periods.<br />

II.1.3. Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> procedures, certificates and Diplom document<br />

When <strong>the</strong> courses def<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s have been attended and <strong>the</strong> programme requirements<br />

fulfilled, and requisite prelim<strong>in</strong>ary and/or <strong>in</strong>termediate exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s passed, students can register for <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

i.e. <strong>the</strong> Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists as a rule of a large, <strong>in</strong>dependently written <strong>the</strong>sis (Diplom <strong>the</strong>sis), and written and oral<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> several subjects.<br />

The Diplom <strong>the</strong>sis, c<strong>on</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a period of university tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, is <strong>in</strong>tended to show that <strong>the</strong> student is able to analyse a problem<br />

<strong>in</strong> his field<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a given period of time <strong>in</strong>dependently and <strong>in</strong> accordance with<br />

scientific or scholarly methods. The Diplom <strong>the</strong>sis at <strong>the</strong> end of a course of study at a Fachhochschule is primarily<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong>-oriented and<br />

usually takes three to six m<strong>on</strong>ths to complete.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> has been passed a certificate is issued giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> subject of <strong>the</strong> Diplom <strong>the</strong>sis, <strong>the</strong> grade received <strong>on</strong> it,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> grades received <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual subjects. At <strong>the</strong> same time, a diploma is presented <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of<br />

which <strong>the</strong> Diplom degree is awarded. The holder of <strong>the</strong> degree is granted <strong>the</strong> right to use <strong>the</strong> title <strong>in</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> subject studied (Diplom-Ingenieur, Diplom-<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matiker, Diplom-Kaufmann, Diplom-Betriebswirt). The designati<strong>on</strong> (FH) is added <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of Diplom degrees from<br />

Fachhochschulen.
