2. opti<strong>on</strong>al subjects.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al pass marks awarded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> are determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>on</strong> a scale of 0 to 10 by <strong>the</strong> arithmetical mean between:<br />

<strong>the</strong> total marks awarded for <strong>the</strong> papers;<br />

<strong>the</strong> average of <strong>the</strong> grades for <strong>the</strong> upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary and COU courses.<br />

For a pass <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al mark must be 5 or above, and <strong>the</strong> overall grade for <strong>the</strong> papers must be at least<br />

4. Students may not present <strong>the</strong>mselves for <strong>the</strong> entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s more than four times.<br />

There is a special versi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for foreign or Spanish students who have had part or all of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> abroad. This procedure is governed by a recent m<strong>in</strong>isterial order and <strong>the</strong> Universidad Naci<strong>on</strong>al de<br />

Educación a Distancia has been given <strong>the</strong> task of organis<strong>in</strong>g it. Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s may be taken at Spanish embassies or<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sulates abroad if <strong>the</strong> number of students registered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country or city <strong>in</strong> questi<strong>on</strong> justifies it.<br />

II.1.1. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Entry to n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s is, with <strong>the</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong> of advanced art studies (Enseñanzas Superiores<br />

Artísticas) which have a structure and format of <strong>the</strong>ir own, dependent up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> successful completi<strong>on</strong> of sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong><br />

(Bachillerato) and <strong>the</strong> orientati<strong>on</strong> course for <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong> (Curso de Orientación Universitaria).<br />

In general, with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong> sector, two types of studies may be dist<strong>in</strong>guished: educati<strong>on</strong> which<br />

leads to qualificati<strong>on</strong>s that have been formally stated to be equivalent to similar qualificati<strong>on</strong>s ga<strong>in</strong>ed from various university<br />

courses, and specific educati<strong>on</strong>al courses which are not equivalent.<br />

With regard to <strong>the</strong> first group of studies (tourism), <strong>the</strong> academic requirements are <strong>the</strong> same as those for university entrance<br />

(see II.1.2), <strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> to which <strong>the</strong>re are some specific entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s geared to <strong>the</strong> particular features of such<br />

studies.<br />

The sec<strong>on</strong>d group c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s special studies with excepti<strong>on</strong>al features (dramatic art, s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g and c<strong>on</strong>servatories of music). The<br />

usual requirement is a pass <strong>in</strong> an entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> or test and an academic level equivalent to Graduado Escolar<br />

(completi<strong>on</strong> of primary educati<strong>on</strong>) or Bachillerato (sec<strong>on</strong>dary school).<br />

II.1.2. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to university<br />

Although <strong>the</strong>re are several different ways of enter<strong>in</strong>g a university, it has to be said that <strong>the</strong> majority of students take <strong>the</strong> COU<br />

and <strong>the</strong> pruebas de acceso (see II.1).<br />

Entry to Facultades, Colegios Universitarios and Escuelas Superiores Técnicas<br />

Students who wish to be admitted to <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s must have successfully completed sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> (BUP),<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e-year orientati<strong>on</strong> course (COU), and also must have passed university entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s (pruebas de acceso).<br />

Entry to Escuelas Universitarias<br />

Students who wish to study at Escuelas Universitarias are not required to pass <strong>the</strong> entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. Although it is not<br />

an express requirement, <strong>in</strong> practice, students who have passed this exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> have a better chance of be<strong>in</strong>g admitted to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

first choice of study area.
