I.3. Organisati<strong>on</strong> of course of studies<br />

I.3.1. N<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

A. Technological educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s (TEI)<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g is carried out <strong>on</strong> a semester basis and <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong>oretical <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> various subjects; practicals, tutorials and<br />

laboratory and field tests, which are aimed at lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and <strong>the</strong> acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al skills; sem<strong>in</strong>ars, visits to <strong>in</strong>dustrial plants and o<strong>the</strong>r activities; practis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> relevant professi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Regulati<strong>on</strong> of studies<br />

The academic year commences <strong>on</strong> 1 September and c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues until 31 August of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year. The teach<strong>in</strong>g year<br />

commences <strong>on</strong> 1 September and ends <strong>on</strong> 5 July of <strong>the</strong> subsequent year; it c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s two <strong>in</strong>dependent teach<strong>in</strong>g periods, <strong>the</strong><br />

didactic semesters, called <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter and spr<strong>in</strong>g semesters respectively. The w<strong>in</strong>ter semester commences <strong>on</strong> 1 September; <strong>the</strong><br />

spr<strong>in</strong>g semester c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues until <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d half of June.<br />

Each teach<strong>in</strong>g period comprises 15 full weeks of <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> plus two exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> periods, each last<strong>in</strong>g two weeks. In case of<br />

failure, <strong>the</strong> relevant subjects will be repeated dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> next exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> period. For every subject, students are required to<br />

attend a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 32 and a maximum of 45 hours’ teach<strong>in</strong>g per week. Attendance is compulsory for all students.<br />

Students <strong>in</strong> a given department receive <strong>the</strong>ir degree when:<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have successfully completed <strong>the</strong>ir compulsory and mandatory elective classes, as well as any opti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> compliance<br />

with <strong>the</strong> study and procedural regulati<strong>on</strong>s;<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir graduati<strong>on</strong> project has been approved;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have completed <strong>the</strong>ir professi<strong>on</strong>al placements.<br />

Studies at <strong>the</strong> TEI last seven or eight semesters, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> compulsory professi<strong>on</strong>al placement and <strong>the</strong> completi<strong>on</strong> of a<br />

graduati<strong>on</strong> project, which is evaluated separately. Studies <strong>in</strong> all departments result <strong>in</strong> a degree called Ptychio TEI, which<br />

entitles <strong>the</strong>ir holders to practise <strong>the</strong>ir respective professi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Organisati<strong>on</strong> of subjects — Curriculum<br />

Subjects <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> curriculum <strong>in</strong> each department are broken down as follows.<br />

(1) General compulsory subjects: <strong>the</strong>se subjects <strong>in</strong>volve basic topics that are dedicated to <strong>the</strong> chosen area of specialisati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

and which are compulsory for all students <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> department.<br />

(2) Mandatory elective subjects: <strong>the</strong>se subjects cover areas of specialisati<strong>on</strong> which <strong>the</strong> students must select from am<strong>on</strong>g a<br />

limited number. These subjects may be grouped toge<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>in</strong> this case students must follow all <strong>the</strong> subjects that fall<br />

under a given group.<br />

(3) Opti<strong>on</strong>al subjects: <strong>the</strong>se subjects cover areas of general educati<strong>on</strong> or provide <strong>in</strong>-depth treatment of a particular topic; <strong>the</strong>y<br />

may ei<strong>the</strong>r bel<strong>on</strong>g to a particular scientific doma<strong>in</strong> or be <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary.<br />

Each subject <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> department’s curriculum is divided <strong>in</strong>to a number of teach<strong>in</strong>g modules called didaktiki m<strong>on</strong>ada (dm). A<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g module entails <strong>on</strong>e hour of <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> per week. This applies to all <strong>the</strong> subjects taught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department. The<br />

graduati<strong>on</strong> project c<strong>on</strong>sists of between 10 and 15 teach<strong>in</strong>g modules. Field trips are not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

modules.
