Instituti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> two Länder comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g functi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> universities, Fachhochschulen and, <strong>in</strong> some<br />

cases, colleges of art and music. They offer courses of study of vary<strong>in</strong>g durati<strong>on</strong> and lead<strong>in</strong>g to different degrees.<br />

Gesamtschule<br />

Comprehensive school exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> two forms: <strong>the</strong> cooperative comprehensive school comb<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> schools of <strong>the</strong> tradi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

tripartite system under <strong>on</strong>e roof and harm<strong>on</strong>ises <strong>the</strong> curricula <strong>in</strong> order to facilitate <strong>the</strong> transfer of pupils between <strong>the</strong> different<br />

coexist<strong>in</strong>g types; <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated comprehensive school admits all pupils of a certa<strong>in</strong> age without differentiat<strong>in</strong>g between <strong>the</strong><br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al school types.<br />

Grundschule<br />

Primary school marks <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of compulsory educati<strong>on</strong>, to which all children go toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y have reached <strong>the</strong><br />

age of six (<strong>in</strong> general grades <strong>on</strong>e to four). The aim of <strong>the</strong> primary school is to provide its pupils with <strong>the</strong> basis for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g educati<strong>on</strong> at <strong>the</strong> lower level of sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Gymnasiale Oberstufe<br />

Upper level of <strong>the</strong> Gymnasium (normally grades 11 to 13) provid<strong>in</strong>g general university entrance qualificati<strong>on</strong> by <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Abiturprüfung).<br />

Gymnasium<br />

General educati<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary school (normally grades 5 to 13) provid<strong>in</strong>g general university entrance qualificati<strong>on</strong>. See also<br />

Hauptschule<br />

General educati<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary school — lower level — provid<strong>in</strong>g full-time compulsory educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Kolleg<br />

Institute of general educati<strong>on</strong> offer<strong>in</strong>g day school courses for adults with work experience and <strong>the</strong> possibility to acquire <strong>the</strong><br />

Allgeme<strong>in</strong>e Hochschulreife.<br />

Kunsthochschule/Musikhochschule<br />

College of art/College of music.<br />

Mittelschule<br />

General educati<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary school (grades 5 to 10) <strong>in</strong> Sax<strong>on</strong>y provid<strong>in</strong>g different courses of educati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> possibility to<br />

acquire <strong>the</strong> Hauptschule certificate or <strong>the</strong> Realschule certificate. From grade seven, compulsory subjects are taught <strong>in</strong> class at<br />

two different levels accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> curricula and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tended f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Hauptschule (after grade n<strong>in</strong>e) or <strong>the</strong><br />

Realschule (after grade 10).<br />

Orientierungsstufe<br />

Grades five and six may be organised as an orientati<strong>on</strong>al stage dur<strong>in</strong>g which <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> a particular school type is left<br />

open. In some Länder <strong>the</strong> orientati<strong>on</strong> stage may be a separate organisati<strong>on</strong>al unit <strong>in</strong>dependent of <strong>the</strong> standard school types, for<br />

which <strong>the</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g grade is seven.<br />

Pädagogische Hochschule<br />

Teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g college which <strong>on</strong>ly exists <strong>in</strong> five Länder where teachers are tra<strong>in</strong>ed for careers <strong>in</strong> primary and lower<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary as well as <strong>in</strong> special educati<strong>on</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Länder courses for <strong>the</strong> abovementi<strong>on</strong>ed teach<strong>in</strong>g careers are offered by<br />

universities, Gesamthochschulen and colleges of art and music.<br />

Realschule<br />

General educati<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary school — lower level, normally grades 5 to 10 — go<strong>in</strong>g bey<strong>on</strong>d <strong>the</strong> level of <strong>the</strong> Hauptschule and<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g access to upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> where a higher educati<strong>on</strong> entrance qualificati<strong>on</strong> or a vocati<strong>on</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong> may<br />

be obta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />
