The Curso de Orientación Universitaria (COU)<br />

Before beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g higher educati<strong>on</strong>, students have to take what is called <strong>the</strong> Curso de Orientación Universitaria — COU<br />

(orientati<strong>on</strong> course<br />

for <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong>) which is a s<strong>in</strong>e qua n<strong>on</strong> for enter<strong>in</strong>g higher educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The COU is a <strong>on</strong>e-year academic course taught <strong>in</strong> public sec<strong>on</strong>dary schools (Institutos de Bachillerato) and <strong>in</strong> recognised<br />

private schools.<br />

When this course was first organised it was placed under university supervisi<strong>on</strong>; experts are of <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>i<strong>on</strong> that it has, <strong>in</strong><br />

effect, become a fourth year of Bachillerato for those who wish to enter university. Moreover, <strong>the</strong> vast majority of university<br />

students have completed this type of educati<strong>on</strong>; very few come from <strong>the</strong> Formación Profesi<strong>on</strong>al.<br />

There are four opti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> COU, namely:<br />

(i) Science and technology;<br />

(ii) Biology and medic<strong>in</strong>e;<br />

(iii) Social sciences;<br />

(iv) Arts and languages.<br />

The selecti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> desired opti<strong>on</strong> implies a preference for subsequent university entry. In this way, <strong>the</strong> student will study a<br />

core curriculum of three subjects (Spanish language, a foreign language and <strong>the</strong> history of philosophy) and an opti<strong>on</strong>al group<br />

of subjects c<strong>on</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g of two compulsory <strong>on</strong>es and ano<strong>the</strong>r two chosen from a list of four. Students may also take a sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

foreign language as an opti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

On completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> COU, students who have passed <strong>in</strong> all subjects taken receive <strong>the</strong> overall pass certificate, giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>in</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, access to university studies.<br />

The pruebas de acceso a la universidad<br />

Students wish<strong>in</strong>g to study at Facultades, Colegios Universitarios and Escuelas Superiores Técnicas (see I.1) also have to pass<br />

a general entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> so-called pruebas de acceso.<br />

University entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are held twice a year, <strong>in</strong> June and September, and are organised by <strong>the</strong> university c<strong>on</strong>cerned,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> participati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> teachers c<strong>on</strong>duct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> COU.<br />

Students have to sit <strong>the</strong>se exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s at <strong>the</strong> university with which <strong>the</strong>ir sec<strong>on</strong>dary school (Bachillerato) is registered; this is<br />

usually <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e nearest to <strong>the</strong> school. In Madrid and Barcel<strong>on</strong>a, where <strong>the</strong>re are several universities, a number of schools are<br />

allocated to each university. Sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> at a particular university does not give <strong>the</strong> right to subsequent entry to<br />

that university; this is governed by <strong>the</strong> arrangements for allocat<strong>in</strong>g vacant places at <strong>the</strong> various <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s as provided by<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g legislati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The format of <strong>the</strong> entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s is established by m<strong>in</strong>isterial order and c<strong>on</strong>sists of two papers:<br />

first paper: this relates to <strong>the</strong> COU core subjects and is divided <strong>in</strong>to three parts:<br />

1. textual analysis and Spanish language and, if appropriate, <strong>the</strong> official language of <strong>the</strong> aut<strong>on</strong>omous<br />

community c<strong>on</strong>cerned (Euskera, Catalan, Galician and <strong>the</strong> language of Valencia);<br />

2. foreign language;<br />

3. philosophy;<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d paper: this relates to <strong>the</strong> subjects of <strong>the</strong> opti<strong>on</strong> selected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> COU. It is divided <strong>in</strong>to two parts:<br />

1. compulsory subjects;
