Courses may run for a year, for semesters (two per academic year) or both. The <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> itself decides which type is more<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venient for its courses of study. Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s take place at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> semester (for semestral subjects) or at <strong>the</strong> end of<br />

<strong>the</strong> year (for annual subjects).<br />

The structure of <strong>the</strong> curriculum is <strong>the</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>sibility of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. Courses may be structured <strong>on</strong> a traditi<strong>on</strong>al basis<br />

(academic years or semesters) or <strong>on</strong> credit units. A course organised <strong>in</strong> credit units may be easily updated because <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

are allowed to modify <strong>the</strong> curricula every year.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> comp<strong>on</strong>ents of a curriculum <strong>in</strong> credit units are: (i) <strong>the</strong> def<strong>in</strong>iti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> subject; (ii) <strong>the</strong> list<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

compulsory scientific subjects and <strong>the</strong>ir corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g credit units; (iii) <strong>the</strong> list<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> opti<strong>on</strong>al subjects and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g credit units; (iv) <strong>the</strong> length of <strong>the</strong> course, <strong>in</strong> academic years; (v) <strong>the</strong> total number of credit units required for <strong>the</strong><br />

completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> course. Each credit unit corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to 15 hours of <strong>the</strong>oretical lectures or to 40 hours of practical lectures or<br />

to 22 hours of <strong>the</strong>oretical-practical lectures or to 30 hours of practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or sem<strong>in</strong>ars.<br />

Assessment of knowledge<br />

Every higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> has <strong>the</strong> authority to lay down <strong>the</strong><br />

general rules govern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> assessment of knowledge with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> overall parameters legally established at nati<strong>on</strong>al level. They<br />

may opt for ei<strong>the</strong>r c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous assessment or a f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, or a mixture of both. Assessment takes place throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

course of study <strong>in</strong> each subject of <strong>the</strong> syllabus. For <strong>in</strong>stance, a student who is enrolled for five subjects dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first year of<br />

a course will have to undergo at <strong>the</strong> end of that year five exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s/c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous assessments (<strong>on</strong>e for each separate subject).<br />

In each academic year, students can take exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s at two different periods. A first period (normal) and a sec<strong>on</strong>d period<br />

(resit). In <strong>the</strong> latter period (September/October), <strong>the</strong> student may <strong>on</strong>ly take two exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. Under certa<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, any<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> may grant a student total or partial exempti<strong>on</strong> from <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. This applies to both<br />

public and private <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Results/f<strong>in</strong>al grad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The result achieved <strong>in</strong> a subject, whe<strong>the</strong>r through c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous assessment or <strong>in</strong> an exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, is expressed al<strong>on</strong>g a scale from<br />

0 to 20 marks. A pass requires at least 10 marks.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al grad<strong>in</strong>g of a course is shown <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> relevant diploma or degree certificate (except <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> certificate for a degree of<br />

mestre or doutor) al<strong>on</strong>g a scale of 0 to 20 marks (at least 10 marks are required for a pass).<br />

A result, <strong>in</strong>stead of a number, may be entered <strong>on</strong> diplomas or degree certificates, with <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g equivalences:<br />

10 to 13 marks: Adequate<br />

14 to 15 marks: Good<br />

16 to 17 marks: Good with dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong><br />

18 to 19 marks: Very good with dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong><br />

20 marks: Magna cum laude
