<strong>Higher</strong> educati<strong>on</strong> courses <strong>in</strong> Iceland are exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>-oriented, i.e. exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are taken at <strong>the</strong> end of each course. Degree<br />

programmes are from three to six years <strong>in</strong> durati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>in</strong> most <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>the</strong> studies are divided <strong>in</strong>to study credits<br />

(námse<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gar), 30 credits c<strong>on</strong>stitut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e academic year of full-time studies (<strong>on</strong>e credit equals approximately <strong>on</strong>e week (50<br />

hours) of full-time study), 15 credits c<strong>on</strong>stitut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e semester. In order to be awarded <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>, students must<br />

complete a large number of exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s/tests, projects, written papers, and so <strong>on</strong>. In some cases, especially <strong>in</strong> humanities<br />

and social sciences where<br />

c<strong>on</strong>siderable freedom exists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> selecti<strong>on</strong> of courses and <strong>the</strong> order<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y are taken, students do not always complete <strong>the</strong>ir studies with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prescribed study period. This is partly due to<br />

employment and family resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities, partly to study periods abroad and partly because <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al project or <strong>the</strong>sis takes<br />

more time to complete than is prescribed.<br />

II.3.1. F<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-university<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

The n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong> courses are taught at a number of different educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s and have a prescribed<br />

durati<strong>on</strong> of between two and four years. These <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s offer practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes geared towards specific<br />

occupati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject fields stipulated by <strong>the</strong> law of each <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. The subject fields and occupati<strong>on</strong>s are f<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

applied arts and crafts, drama, music, pre-school teach<strong>in</strong>g, physical educati<strong>on</strong> and educati<strong>on</strong> for teachers of handicapped<br />

people, <strong>the</strong> mentally retarded <strong>in</strong> particular.<br />

The form of <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>, structure of <strong>the</strong> study programme and exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> requirements, also vary from course to course.<br />

The form of <strong>the</strong> course alternates between lectures, class <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>, groupwork, practical experience and specialised practical<br />

work. Class attendance is compulsory.<br />

Students take exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a wide range of discipl<strong>in</strong>es which are relevant to <strong>the</strong> course and <strong>the</strong>y carry out a large written<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> project or special project. All <strong>the</strong>se courses <strong>in</strong>clude practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> course students take oral and/or<br />

written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

The forms of exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s and assessment vary from course to course but <strong>in</strong> all cases <strong>the</strong> course will be assessed by means of<br />

oral or written tests which can be arranged ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>ternally or externally. Internal tests are assessed by <strong>in</strong>ternal exam<strong>in</strong>er(s) or<br />

a comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>in</strong>ternal and external exam<strong>in</strong>ers, who are appo<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. External exam<strong>in</strong>ers are<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Culture and Educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> recommendati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

As a general rule grades are expressed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> 0 to 10 scale (see I.3) or with <strong>the</strong> assessment pass/fail.<br />

On completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> course a certificate of completi<strong>on</strong> (prófskírte<strong>in</strong>i) is issued <strong>on</strong> which <strong>the</strong> results of <strong>the</strong> tests taken, and <strong>the</strong><br />

assessment <strong>the</strong>rof, is stated. The title to which <strong>the</strong> course gives entitlement appears <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> certificate (see Appendices I and<br />

II).<br />

II.3.2. F<strong>in</strong>al university qualificati<strong>on</strong><br />

The university higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s offer courses which lead to <strong>the</strong> acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of an exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> certificate<br />

(prófskírte<strong>in</strong>i) and/or a degree (grádu) or title (titill). Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> results and assessment are stated <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

certificate as is <strong>the</strong> degree/title to which <strong>the</strong> course gives entitlement. These are awarded when <strong>the</strong> student successfully<br />

completes <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, projects or <strong>the</strong>sis prescribed by <strong>the</strong> subject regulati<strong>on</strong>s. A <strong>the</strong>sis or research project is nearly<br />

always a part of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, whe<strong>the</strong>r it is a first (BA/BS/BEd) or an advanced university degree<br />

(Cand/MA/MS/MEd/MPaed/doctorate). A m<strong>in</strong>imum of 90 credits is required for a first university degree, i.e. <strong>the</strong> bachelors<br />

degree. (See Appendix I <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> number of credits required for <strong>the</strong> various university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s.)
