Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for this type of teach<strong>in</strong>g career <strong>in</strong>corporates an 8 to 10 semester course of academic study — occasi<strong>on</strong>ally 12<br />

semesters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of artistic subjects — of at least two subjects. Studies <strong>in</strong> an area of specialisati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g subjectoriented<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g methods, are complemented by educati<strong>on</strong>al science courses and practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g periods of several weeks’<br />

durati<strong>on</strong> as well as at least <strong>on</strong>e subject-related practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period accompany<strong>in</strong>g study <strong>in</strong> at least <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> two subjects.<br />

The pr<strong>in</strong>ciples for <strong>the</strong> academic exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for a teach<strong>in</strong>g career at Gymnasien and <strong>the</strong> general regulati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> standards<br />

for <strong>the</strong> academic exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for almost all discipl<strong>in</strong>es that can be chosen as exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> subjects have been laid down <strong>in</strong><br />

agreements reached by <strong>the</strong> Stand<strong>in</strong>g C<strong>on</strong>ference of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>isters for Educati<strong>on</strong> and Cultural Affairs. The resoluti<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

agreements <strong>on</strong> relatively c<strong>on</strong>crete standard profiles which have entered <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> Länder. These also<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude, provided tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is related to school levels, regulati<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of a teach<strong>in</strong>g qualificati<strong>on</strong> specialis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary level II or <strong>in</strong> both sec<strong>on</strong>dary levels I and II, <strong>in</strong> which case <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g qualificati<strong>on</strong> applies as a rule to <strong>the</strong><br />

Gymnasium or Gesamtschule with gymnasiale Oberstufe.<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g career type 5<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers <strong>in</strong> vocati<strong>on</strong>al subjects at sec<strong>on</strong>dary level II or at vocati<strong>on</strong>al schools<br />

(Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers at part-time vocati<strong>on</strong>al schools (berufliche Schulen); at full-time vocati<strong>on</strong>al schools (berufsbildende<br />

Schulen); at <strong>the</strong> Oberstufe — berufliche Schulen; at sec<strong>on</strong>dary level II; at sec<strong>on</strong>dary level II with vocati<strong>on</strong>al emphasis; careers<br />

as a Studienrat with vocati<strong>on</strong>al emphasis)<br />

Teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g a teach<strong>in</strong>g qualificati<strong>on</strong> for vocati<strong>on</strong>al school subject areas for teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> subject-related<br />

<strong>the</strong>ory and general educati<strong>on</strong> subjects follows an 8 to 10 semester course of study.<br />

This demands:<br />

a subject-related practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period of at least 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths durati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> appropriate companies,<br />

study of educati<strong>on</strong>al science, as a rule extended study of a subject area <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vocati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong> system and study of a<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly general educati<strong>on</strong> subject,<br />

a practical teach<strong>in</strong>g period of several weeks’ durati<strong>on</strong> at a vocati<strong>on</strong>al school, occasi<strong>on</strong>ally an additi<strong>on</strong>al practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

period <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> social field.<br />

An agreement reached by <strong>the</strong> Stand<strong>in</strong>g C<strong>on</strong>ference of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>isters for Educati<strong>on</strong> and Cultural Affairs stipulates <strong>the</strong> general<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples for <strong>the</strong> basic structure of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g subject areas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vocati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong><br />

system: metals technology, electrical eng<strong>in</strong>-eer<strong>in</strong>g, c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, design eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, graphic-design technology,<br />

textile and garment technology, biotechnology, chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, ec<strong>on</strong>omics, adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong>, dietetics and home<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omics, agriculture and horticulture and social sciences. In <strong>the</strong> above-named subject areas o<strong>the</strong>r special fields can be<br />

chosen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework of extended study (e.g. producti<strong>on</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework of <strong>the</strong> subject area metals<br />

technology).<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Länder-specific regulati<strong>on</strong>s, a Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> may replace <strong>the</strong> first State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for teachers <strong>in</strong><br />

certa<strong>in</strong> subject areas.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for teach<strong>in</strong>g careers at vocati<strong>on</strong>al schools is — to take <strong>in</strong>to account <strong>the</strong> special needs of each Land — at times<br />

organised <strong>in</strong> very different fashi<strong>on</strong>s; for <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>the</strong> authorised subjects and subject comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> required<br />

student teacher practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g experience or fur<strong>the</strong>r basic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tents and durati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> course of<br />

study.<br />
