Baccalauréat<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate. This is <strong>the</strong> first nati<strong>on</strong>al higher educati<strong>on</strong> certificate and permits its bearer to enter an<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>cours<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s set up by a State- or university-appo<strong>in</strong>ted committee. The exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s use a rank<strong>in</strong>g scale to select applicants<br />

for admissi<strong>on</strong><br />

to courses which have a limited capacity <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> programmes<br />

(eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, management, public adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong>, etc.).<br />

C<strong>on</strong>seils<br />

Universities are organised by councils, which are groups of people<br />

chosen from <strong>the</strong> university community. These councils <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative council, <strong>the</strong> scientific council and <strong>the</strong><br />

student and university welfare council. Toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se three councils form an assembly which elects <strong>the</strong> president of <strong>the</strong><br />

university for a term of five years. The scientific council and <strong>the</strong> student university welfare council make proposals and have a<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sult<strong>in</strong>g role. The adm<strong>in</strong>istrative council determ<strong>in</strong>es university policy.<br />

Cycle<br />

An organised period of study, <strong>on</strong> different levels, generally last<strong>in</strong>g two years.<br />

Diplôme nati<strong>on</strong>al de l’enseignement supérieur<br />

F<strong>in</strong>al diploma for which <strong>the</strong> same regulati<strong>on</strong>s apply at all higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Diplôme d’études universitaires générales (DEUG)<br />

This diploma represents successful completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> two-year course of <strong>the</strong> first university cycle.<br />

Diplôme d’études universitaires scientifiques et techniques (DEUST)<br />

This diploma represents successful completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> two-year cycle of scientific and technical studies.<br />

Diplôme universitaire de technologie (DUT)<br />

This diploma represents successful completi<strong>on</strong> of two years of study at university <strong>in</strong>stitutes of technology (IUT).<br />

This is a third cycle, nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma and represents successful completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> first year of doctoral studies.<br />

Diplôme d’études supérieures spécialisées (DESS)<br />

Professi<strong>on</strong>ally oriented third cycle, nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma awarded up<strong>on</strong> successful completi<strong>on</strong> of a <strong>on</strong>e-year applied and highly<br />

specialised course of study.<br />

Diplôme de recherche technologique (DRT)<br />

This diploma represents successful completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> two years of study <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third cycle.<br />

Doctorat<br />

This degree is awarded to some<strong>on</strong>e who has defended a <strong>the</strong>sis or completed a series of orig<strong>in</strong>al scientific studies. The doctoral<br />

degree bears <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> particular university grant<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> degree. The doctoral degree allows its holder to pursue<br />

research.<br />
