There are eight o<strong>the</strong>r IEPs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces; students who hold <strong>the</strong> baccalauréat are generally admitted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> first year<br />

after tak<strong>in</strong>g an entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

(b) The grandes écoles scientifiques under <strong>the</strong> authority of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istère de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche<br />

(École centrale des arts et manufactures, École nati<strong>on</strong>ale supérieure des arts et <strong>in</strong>dustries textiles, École nati<strong>on</strong>ale<br />

supérieure des arts et métiers, etc.) accept students <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of a competitive entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. The<br />

students prepare for this very selective exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for two years after <strong>the</strong> baccalauréat ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientific<br />

preparatory classes (classes préparatoires des grandes écoles — CPGE), or <strong>in</strong> a first cycle university programme, or<br />

sometimes at <strong>the</strong> advanced schools <strong>the</strong>mselves. After admissi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> length of courses varies from two to five years<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> school. The schools issue an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g degree which is accredited by <strong>the</strong> commissi<strong>on</strong> des titres<br />

(Commissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Diplomas) under <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istère de l’enseignement supérieur et de la<br />

recherche.<br />

(c) There are 14 grands établissements which, for <strong>the</strong> most part, offer third cycle postgraduate tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes and<br />

award <strong>the</strong>ir own diplomas:<br />

École pratique des hautes études (EPHE);<br />

École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS);<br />

Institut de physique du globe (IPG).<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, such as <strong>the</strong> Institut nati<strong>on</strong>al des langues et civilisati<strong>on</strong>s orientales (Inalco: Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institute of<br />

Oriental Languages), offer complete courses of study. The Collège de France is open to <strong>the</strong> general public. There are no<br />

admissi<strong>on</strong> requirements nor enrolment procedures and a diploma is not awarded.<br />

(d) The four Écoles normales supérieures (ENS), located <strong>in</strong> Paris, F<strong>on</strong>tenay/Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Cloud, Ly<strong>on</strong>s and Cachan, have similar<br />

requirements: a very selective entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> prepared for over two years after <strong>the</strong> baccalauréat <strong>in</strong> scientific<br />

preparatory classes (notably <strong>in</strong> a mathématiques supérieures class and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong> a mathématiques spéciales class) or literary<br />

preparatory classes (lettres supérieures class <strong>the</strong>n première supérieure class). The schools prepare <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

students for <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al university diplomas and for <strong>the</strong> competitive exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s that serve to recruit teachers (<strong>the</strong><br />

CAPES and <strong>the</strong><br />

agrégati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

(e) Certa<strong>in</strong> écoles supérieures (advanced schools) are under <strong>the</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>sibility of o<strong>the</strong>r m<strong>in</strong>istries, notably:<br />

The École nati<strong>on</strong>ale d’adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> (ENA)<br />

The École nati<strong>on</strong>ale d’adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> is under <strong>the</strong> supervisi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> prime m<strong>in</strong>ister. Its purpose is to tra<strong>in</strong> civil<br />

servants who are dest<strong>in</strong>ed for senior management posts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil Service, with <strong>the</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

corps and <strong>the</strong> technical pers<strong>on</strong>nel. Access to <strong>the</strong> school is subject to an entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. The durati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

studies, which <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>in</strong>ternships and studies, is two years.<br />

The military <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

These educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s are dependent up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istère de la défense and <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> army, navy and air<br />

force schools. Admissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> most prestigious (École polytechnique, École spéciale militaire de Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Cyr,<br />

École navale, École de l’air de Sal<strong>on</strong>-de-Provence, etc.) is obta<strong>in</strong>ed after complet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> scientific preparatory<br />

classes and earn<strong>in</strong>g a sufficiently high rank <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> competitive entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The Écoles des m<strong>in</strong>es<br />

The Écoles des m<strong>in</strong>es are under <strong>the</strong> authority of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istère de l’<strong>in</strong>dustrie. They accept students after an entrance<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> or up<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> of a degree (depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> case: BAC plus <strong>on</strong>e year, BAC plus two years, or<br />

BAC plus four years) and issue an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g diploma <strong>in</strong> three or four years.<br />
