The majority of <strong>the</strong> shorter, n<strong>on</strong>-university courses c<strong>on</strong>sist of an <strong>in</strong>tegral study period. Comm<strong>on</strong> to all <strong>the</strong>se tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses is<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y qualify students for a particular occupati<strong>on</strong> and last for three years. (Teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g comprises four years of study.)<br />

Students who take an additi<strong>on</strong>al year (grunnfag) or 20 vekttall <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e subject may obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al cand.mag. degree (see<br />

below).<br />

With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> college sector, some programmes corresp<strong>on</strong>d to university programmes (i.e. arts, social sciences, ma<strong>the</strong>matics and<br />

natural sciences), while <strong>the</strong> majority are not offered at universities. They give <strong>the</strong> right to <strong>the</strong> title Høgskolekandidat (college<br />

graduate). The college courses are fully recognised, i.e. programmes completed at a college will be recognised with <strong>the</strong> same<br />

number of vekttall with<strong>in</strong> a university degree.<br />

The candidatus/candidata magisterii degree (cand.mag) (see below) may be c<strong>on</strong>ferred <strong>on</strong> students who, accord<strong>in</strong>g to certa<strong>in</strong><br />

regulati<strong>on</strong>s, have successfully completed four years of study. With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> college system, <strong>on</strong>e can also obta<strong>in</strong> a higher degree <strong>in</strong><br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omics and bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> (siviløk<strong>on</strong>om) and <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g (sivil<strong>in</strong>geniør).<br />

II.2.2. Undergraduate university degrees<br />

A preparatory course <strong>in</strong> philosophy, logic and <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory of science, examen philosophicum, is normally required of degree<br />

candidates at all <strong>the</strong> universities and is usually taken before or at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of regular faculty studies. Preparati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> takes <strong>on</strong>e semester. At <strong>the</strong> University of Oslo <strong>the</strong> examen facultatum was <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> 1996. This exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with a revised examen philosophicum, corresp<strong>on</strong>d to 10 vekttall.<br />

Students who can fully document that <strong>the</strong>y have already passed exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se subjects at university level, may apply<br />

for exempti<strong>on</strong>. The university colleges do not require examen philosophicum.<br />

The universities offer study programmes <strong>on</strong> two major levels. At <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate/undergraduate level, <strong>the</strong> degree cand.mag.<br />

is normally obta<strong>in</strong>ed after four years of study (three and a half years at <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Natural Sciences).<br />

This <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> examen philosophicum. The m<strong>in</strong>imum requirement is that <strong>on</strong>e subject should have<br />

a study durati<strong>on</strong> of at least three semesters (mellomfag/30 vekttall),<br />

and <strong>on</strong>e o<strong>the</strong>r subject must <strong>in</strong>volve study over at least two semesters (grunnfag/20 vekttall).<br />

The degree may be obta<strong>in</strong>ed at all universities, <strong>in</strong> fields with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> arts, natural sciences or social sciences, or through a<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>se.<br />

Equivalent educati<strong>on</strong> from o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Norway or abroad can also form part of a cand.mag.<br />

degree.<br />

Grades are awarded accord<strong>in</strong>g to a numerical system normally rang<strong>in</strong>g from 1.0 (highest) to 6.0 (lowest), with 4.0 as <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>imum pass<strong>in</strong>g grade. Some programmes/<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s have o<strong>the</strong>r numerical grad<strong>in</strong>g scales. In additi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> pass/fail<br />

(bestått/ikke bestått) mark. It should be noted that <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Arts and <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Social Sciences <strong>on</strong>ly give grades<br />

better than 2.0 <strong>in</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong>al cases.<br />

II.3. Graduate degrees <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

The cand.mag. degree may be expanded towards graduate studies. It normally presupposes a mellomfag/30 vekttall <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same field at <strong>the</strong> undergraduate level. In additi<strong>on</strong> to a <strong>the</strong>sis, based <strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent research, graduate studies require<br />

specialised courses and sem<strong>in</strong>ars. The study period for a graduate degree is normally four semesters (two years) and leads to<br />

<strong>the</strong> title candidatus/candidata philologiae (cand.philol.) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> arts, candidatus/candidata politicarum (cand.polit.) <strong>in</strong> social<br />

sciences or candidatus/candidata scientarium (cand.scient.) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of ma<strong>the</strong>matics and natural sciences.
