The Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD or DPhil) is a research degree with few, if any, taught comp<strong>on</strong>ents.<br />

The titles Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD or DPhil) <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>the</strong> degree was earned ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

through research, and not follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Doctors have <strong>the</strong> right to use <strong>the</strong> title ‘doctor’ and to put PhD or DPhil, as <strong>the</strong> case may be, after <strong>the</strong>ir names. Their speciality<br />

is not <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> degree.<br />

The PhD normally requires at least three years of full-time orig<strong>in</strong>al research — after complet<strong>in</strong>g a good first degree — at a<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> (usually a university), under <strong>the</strong> supervisi<strong>on</strong> of a senior academic.<br />

To be admitted, candidates have to show evidence of <strong>the</strong>ir capacity to undertake <strong>in</strong>dividual research and see <strong>the</strong> work through.<br />

If <strong>the</strong>y do not have a research Master’s degree already, <strong>the</strong>y may be asked to undertake <strong>on</strong>e. Research begun <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Master’s<br />

is often c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued and expanded for <strong>the</strong> PhD.<br />

In c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> with a supervisor, <strong>the</strong>y have to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> topic to be researched. The work will <strong>in</strong>volve a review of <strong>the</strong><br />

relevant literature and, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> experimental science field, some experimentati<strong>on</strong> to test a hypo<strong>the</strong>sis. When data have been<br />

analysed and <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis written up and submitted <strong>the</strong> student will be called up<strong>on</strong> to defend it before an exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g board.<br />

Nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Master’s nor <strong>the</strong> doctorate are graded, although a Master’s can be awarded with dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong>. Some time limitati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

may be imposed by <strong>the</strong> university regulati<strong>on</strong>s, with<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> degree has to be completed.<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> doctorates are awarded to candidates who have dist<strong>in</strong>guished <strong>the</strong>mselves by orig<strong>in</strong>al research <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fields.<br />

H<strong>on</strong>orary Doctorates<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> earned Master’s and doctorate, universities also award h<strong>on</strong>orary senior doctorates (Doctor of Science,<br />

DSc/Doctor of Letters, DLitt) to more mature and established workers who have made recognised c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s to public<br />

knowledge.<br />

For examples of doctorates see Appendices VI and VII.<br />

II.3.3. Academic recogniti<strong>on</strong> of f<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong> for purposes<br />

of fur<strong>the</strong>r study<br />

The processes of academic recogniti<strong>on</strong>, however esoteric <strong>the</strong>y may appear to an un<strong>in</strong>formed outsider, are well established and<br />

clear-cut. The pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that underlies <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> between general and course requirements at <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of entry to higher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues to apply throughout <strong>the</strong> hierarchy of degrees. A first degree does not automatically entitle <strong>the</strong> holder to<br />

enter a Master’s course, nor does <strong>the</strong> possessi<strong>on</strong> of a Master’s degree necessarily qualify <strong>the</strong> holder for doctorate work.<br />

In each case fur<strong>the</strong>r evidence will normally be required of <strong>the</strong> candidate’s fitness for <strong>the</strong> higher degree course. This evidence<br />

may take <strong>the</strong> form of <strong>the</strong> class obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> a good h<strong>on</strong>ours degree, a postgraduate diploma or a Master’s dissertati<strong>on</strong> with a<br />

research basis.<br />

The department of <strong>the</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cerned acts aut<strong>on</strong>omously <strong>in</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g each <strong>in</strong>dividual decisi<strong>on</strong>; while it is<br />

likely to <strong>in</strong>sist <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> candidate’s academic achievements, it will also take <strong>in</strong>to account his/her professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

experience and pers<strong>on</strong>al maturity.
