university<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ics and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g hospitals (16-week periods of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal medic<strong>in</strong>e, surgery and <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e o<strong>the</strong>r (opti<strong>on</strong>al)<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ical area).<br />

The State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

govern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> licens<strong>in</strong>g of physicians (Approbati<strong>on</strong>sordnung<br />

für Ärzte), are adm<strong>in</strong>istered by <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> boards for<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e established by <strong>the</strong> Länder.<br />

(a) The prelim<strong>in</strong>ary medical exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is a written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. As of autumn 1989, it has c<strong>on</strong>sisted of both<br />

written and oral parts.<br />

The written part of <strong>the</strong> prelim<strong>in</strong>ary medical exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> covers <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g subject areas:<br />

(i) physics for students of medic<strong>in</strong>e and physiology<br />

(ii) chemistry for students of medic<strong>in</strong>e and biochemistry<br />

(iii) biology for students of medic<strong>in</strong>e and anatomy<br />

(iv) medical psychology and medical sociology.<br />

The oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> will cover two of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g subjects:<br />

physiology;<br />

biochemistry;<br />

anatomy;<br />

fundamentals of medical psychology and medical sociology.<br />

(b) The first stage of <strong>the</strong> medical degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is a<br />

written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> and covers <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g subjects:<br />

(i) fundamentals of pathology and neuropathology; human genetics; medical microbiology; immunology and immunopathology and <strong>the</strong> history of medic<strong>in</strong>e;<br />

(ii) deal<strong>in</strong>g with patients; fundamentals of cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

diagnostics; <strong>in</strong>itial treatment of acute emergency cases and radiology;<br />

(iii) fundamentals of pharmacology and toxicology; pathophysiology and pathobiochemistry, cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

chemistry and bioma<strong>the</strong>matics.<br />

(c) The sec<strong>on</strong>d stage of <strong>the</strong> medical degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists of written and oral parts.<br />

The written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> covers <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g subjects:<br />

(i) n<strong>on</strong>-operative areas<br />

(ii) operative areas<br />

(iii) neurology<br />

(iv) ecological areas and general medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> oral part of <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, as of autumn 1988, students are tested <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e each of <strong>the</strong> subjects listed<br />

under numbers 1 and 2:<br />

1. <strong>in</strong>ternal medic<strong>in</strong>e, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, pathology, pharmacology,<br />

microbiology, hygiene, public health and social medic<strong>in</strong>e;<br />

2. general medic<strong>in</strong>e, anaes<strong>the</strong>siology, emergency treatment and <strong>in</strong>tensive care, work medic<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

ophthalmology, dermato and venereal diseases, otorh<strong>in</strong>olaryngology, cl<strong>in</strong>ical chemistry, neurology,<br />

orthopaedics, psychiatry, psychosomatic medic<strong>in</strong>e and psycho<strong>the</strong>rapy, radiology, medical law, urology.<br />

(d) The third stage of <strong>the</strong> medical degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is oral and practical <strong>in</strong> nature.
