Each <strong>in</strong>dividual higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> issues exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s for each course of study, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account <strong>the</strong><br />

prec<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> purpose and nature of <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> procedure<br />

and requirements. As a rule, <strong>the</strong> prec<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are that <strong>the</strong> student has passed an <strong>in</strong>termediate<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Vorprüfung/Zwischenprüfung), normally taken after <strong>the</strong> fourth semester, and can present a certa<strong>in</strong> number of<br />

course certificates from special classes. The <strong>in</strong>termediate exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> tests whe<strong>the</strong>r students have learned <strong>the</strong> fundamental<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and scientific methods relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir subject. The exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> usually c<strong>on</strong>sists of written and oral secti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Students are exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire range of material taught dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first four semesters of <strong>the</strong> degree programme.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Magister exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, first State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>) <strong>in</strong>cludes, al<strong>on</strong>gside<br />

written and oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, a dissertati<strong>on</strong> of some length (Magisterarbeit/Diplomarbeit, Zulassungsarbeit — paper<br />

qualify<strong>in</strong>g for admissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>). In this dissertati<strong>on</strong> students must prove that <strong>the</strong>y are capable of carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out <strong>in</strong>dependent scientific work. The written and oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s cover <strong>the</strong> entire range of material taught dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> study<br />

programme but c<strong>on</strong>centrate <strong>on</strong> some specialist areas.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Federal Republic of Germany <strong>the</strong>re is no cumulative test<strong>in</strong>g system <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g ‘credits’ or unités de valeur, lead<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of a degree <strong>on</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g reached <strong>the</strong> required m<strong>in</strong>imum number of credits.<br />

I.2.5. Grad<strong>in</strong>g system<br />

The German grad<strong>in</strong>g system <strong>in</strong>volves five or six grades as a rule, ‘1’ be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best grade and ‘5’ or ‘6’ <strong>the</strong> worst. A ‘4’ is <strong>the</strong><br />

lowest pass grade.
