Type 3: Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers at all sec<strong>on</strong>dary level I school types or at <strong>in</strong>dividual sec<strong>on</strong>dary level I school types<br />

Type 4: Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> general educati<strong>on</strong> subjects at sec<strong>on</strong>dary level II or for <strong>the</strong> Gymnasium<br />

Type 5: Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers <strong>in</strong> vocati<strong>on</strong>al subjects at sec<strong>on</strong>dary level II or at vocati<strong>on</strong>al schools<br />

Type 6: Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers <strong>in</strong> special educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for any of <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g careers described above is divided <strong>in</strong>to two phases:<br />

1. a course of study at an <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong> (university, technical university, teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g college, art or<br />

music college, comprehensive university), which, from <strong>the</strong> outset, is geared towards <strong>the</strong> subsequent teach<strong>in</strong>g professi<strong>on</strong><br />

and <strong>the</strong> required certificates and also <strong>in</strong>cludes student teacher practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g comp<strong>on</strong>ents as an <strong>in</strong>tegrated part of <strong>the</strong><br />

course;<br />

2. a pedagogic-practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of preparatory service (Vorbereitungsdienst) at sem<strong>in</strong>ars for<br />

teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g schools.<br />

Entrance to teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g requires a higher educati<strong>on</strong> entrance qualificati<strong>on</strong>, which is acquired after 12 or 13 years of<br />

school<strong>in</strong>g by pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Abitur exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. In specific cases it can also be acquired <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ways, for example by adults<br />

after successfully complet<strong>in</strong>g night school classes, or <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> cases follow<strong>in</strong>g successful completi<strong>on</strong> of a n<strong>on</strong>-university<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tertiary sector.<br />

II.4.2. Descripti<strong>on</strong> of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

The first period of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g i.e. <strong>the</strong> course of study, is organised<br />

differently accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Land and <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g career, ei<strong>the</strong>r as:<br />

a specialist comp<strong>on</strong>ent (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g subject-oriented teach<strong>in</strong>g methods) with study of at least two subjects/subject areas or<br />

subject groups;<br />

an educati<strong>on</strong>al sciences comp<strong>on</strong>ent with compulsory study of educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>the</strong>ory and psychology; plus a choice of<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>al study areas (e.g. philosophy, social sciences/politics, <strong>the</strong>ology);<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g practice, sometimes of several weeks durati<strong>on</strong>, accompany<strong>in</strong>g courses of study.<br />

Here <strong>the</strong> agreement reached by <strong>the</strong> Stand<strong>in</strong>g C<strong>on</strong>ference of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>isters for Educati<strong>on</strong> and Cultural Affairs sets m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />

standards for <strong>the</strong> two first-menti<strong>on</strong>ed comp<strong>on</strong>ents, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of hours of <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> per week dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> semester.<br />

The characteristic elements of courses for <strong>the</strong> above types of teach<strong>in</strong>g career <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federal Republic of Germany will be<br />

described below <strong>in</strong> generalised form applicable to all Länder. Particulars are laid down <strong>in</strong> study regulati<strong>on</strong>s and State tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

and exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s. These <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong> particular provisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong>:<br />

<strong>the</strong> subjects/subject areas and comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s that may be chosen for <strong>the</strong> respective teach<strong>in</strong>g careers;<br />

<strong>the</strong> scope and c<strong>on</strong>tent of <strong>the</strong> course of study <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual subjects/subject areas, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g educati<strong>on</strong>al sciences and<br />

subject-oriented teach<strong>in</strong>g methods;<br />

<strong>the</strong> type of certificates acquired dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course of study, and <strong>the</strong> type and scope of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual parts of <strong>the</strong><br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> assessment procedure.<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g career type 1<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers at Grundschulen or primary level<br />

(Teach<strong>in</strong>g careers at Grundschulen; teach<strong>in</strong>g careers at primary level; teach<strong>in</strong>g careers with <strong>the</strong> emphasis <strong>on</strong> primary level)
