Diploma courses: Full-time: two or three years<br />

Degree courses: undergraduate Full-time: three to six years<br />

postgraduate Full-time: <strong>on</strong>e to four years<br />

In general <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum length of an undergraduate course is three or four years. Some courses are l<strong>on</strong>ger; for example,<br />

undergraduate degree courses <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e are of 5 or 6 years durati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are normally held at <strong>the</strong> end of each year with a decisi<strong>on</strong> about specialisati<strong>on</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g taken after <strong>the</strong> first. The<br />

f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> students c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous assessment record are decisive.<br />

Assessment of <strong>the</strong> progress of <strong>the</strong> students is likely to be c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous with a key exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong>ir first or sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

year as well as at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> course. A good student will be awarded a classified h<strong>on</strong>ours degree.<br />

Validati<strong>on</strong><br />

Universities are not <strong>on</strong>ly resp<strong>on</strong>sible for sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own standards, but also for award<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own degrees. For historical<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>s, some of <strong>the</strong>m also validate (i.e. guarantee <strong>the</strong> quality of) first degree courses <strong>in</strong> some o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s. As menti<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

before, however, validati<strong>on</strong> of n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong> is ma<strong>in</strong>ly by <strong>the</strong> OU and some of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r universities.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> majority of students, courses run for three years and lead to <strong>the</strong> degree of Bachelor of Arts or of Science (BA or BSc);<br />

for some, <strong>the</strong> course will be much l<strong>on</strong>ger and <strong>the</strong> degree different (see Secti<strong>on</strong> II.3 for a detailed descripti<strong>on</strong>).<br />

A high proporti<strong>on</strong> of students f<strong>in</strong>ish <strong>the</strong> course successfully and <strong>on</strong> time. This is partly due to <strong>the</strong> very competitive entry, <strong>the</strong><br />

small size of classes, <strong>in</strong>dividual attenti<strong>on</strong> given to students through <strong>the</strong> tutorial system and <strong>the</strong> high degree of specialisati<strong>on</strong> at<br />

A level.
