The courses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se schools last three years and attendance is compulsory.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r university-level <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Stratiotikes Scholes Axiomatik<strong>on</strong> (Military Academies)<br />

These academies fall under <strong>the</strong> jurisdicti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Nati<strong>on</strong>al Defence and are equivalent to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Greek<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of university-level higher educati<strong>on</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> provisi<strong>on</strong>s of L. 1351/1983. For this reas<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> same rules<br />

are applied for student entry except that <strong>the</strong>y must have Greek nati<strong>on</strong>ality. A brief descripti<strong>on</strong> of each of <strong>the</strong> military<br />

academies is <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

(1) Stratiotiki Scholi Evelpid<strong>on</strong> — SSE (Military Academy)<br />

The durati<strong>on</strong> of studies is four years and <strong>the</strong> curriculum covers academic subjects and general military tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. The<br />

objective of <strong>the</strong> academy is to test and extend <strong>the</strong> general knowledge of its students and to provide military tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />

develop military virtues and discipl<strong>in</strong>e. The graduates of <strong>the</strong> academy serve as officers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek Army.<br />

(2) Scholi Naftik<strong>on</strong> Dokim<strong>on</strong> (Naval Cadet Academy)<br />

The course of studies at <strong>the</strong> academy lasts for four years. The students are tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> order to acquire skills required to<br />

pursue a career as officers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek Navy and to possess <strong>the</strong> knowledge necessary for apply<strong>in</strong>g scientific and<br />

technological advances used by <strong>the</strong> naval armed forces. There are two secti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy designated as combat and<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. The subjects taught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se secti<strong>on</strong>s vary and <strong>the</strong>y are compulsory without electives.<br />

(3) Scholi Icar<strong>on</strong> — SI (Airforce Academy)<br />

The academy was founded <strong>in</strong> 1931 and <strong>the</strong> course of studies lasts four years. There are two secti<strong>on</strong>s currently operat<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

<strong>the</strong> acad-emy which tra<strong>in</strong> pilots and eng<strong>in</strong>eers specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> aer<strong>on</strong>autical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and airport <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> and meteorology. The attendance of all courses is compulsory. The graduates of <strong>the</strong> academy serve as<br />

officers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek Air Force.<br />

(4) Stratiotiki Scholi Axiomatik<strong>on</strong> Somat<strong>on</strong> — SSAS (Military Corps Academy)<br />

The objective of <strong>the</strong> academy is to provide scientific and military tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g so that students may acquire <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />

knowledge, experience, moral and physical skills to fulfil <strong>the</strong>ir duties as science officers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Army, Navy, Air Force<br />

and Police. The follow<strong>in</strong>g four departments exist at <strong>the</strong> academy: medic<strong>in</strong>e, veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e, dentistry and pharmacy.<br />

The course is divided <strong>in</strong>to:<br />

scientific tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g: classes are taught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> relevant department of <strong>the</strong> Aristotelei<strong>on</strong> University of Thessal<strong>on</strong>iki — <strong>the</strong><br />

students are tra<strong>in</strong>ed like all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r students of <strong>the</strong> university and have <strong>the</strong> same obligati<strong>on</strong>s;<br />

military tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g: dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> academic year tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g takes place <strong>in</strong> tandem with university educati<strong>on</strong> at periods when<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are no university courses for <strong>the</strong> students;<br />

general tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g: this c<strong>on</strong>sists of courses <strong>in</strong> topics of general <strong>in</strong>terest, lectures, teach<strong>in</strong>g of foreign languages,<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>al visits, etc.<br />

(5) Scholi Axiomatik<strong>on</strong> Nosileftikis — SAN (Military Nurs<strong>in</strong>g Academy)
