The degree Master of Philosophy (Mag. phil.) is granted when <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s are met:<br />

<br />

(b) fulfilment of <strong>the</strong> language requirements (read<strong>in</strong>g knowledge of German, English and Lat<strong>in</strong> and ability to speak and write<br />

<strong>in</strong> German or English);<br />

(c) a Master’s <strong>the</strong>sis approved by <strong>the</strong> candidate’s director, is handed <strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> director of studies;<br />

(d) a five-hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> a questi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e of four topics proposed by <strong>the</strong> candidate and approved by<br />

<strong>the</strong> chairman of <strong>the</strong> board of exam<strong>in</strong>ers is completed;<br />

(e) a <strong>on</strong>e- to two-hour oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> four questi<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is taken and passed.<br />

II.3.3. Academic recogniti<strong>on</strong> of f<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for purposes of fur<strong>the</strong>r study<br />

FHL<br />

No doctorate studies are available at <strong>the</strong> FHL. However holders of an FHL diploma can enter <strong>the</strong> graduate programme <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same subject at an Austrian technical university. Those who obta<strong>in</strong> a diploma can also be admitted to postgraduate studies as<br />

described under secti<strong>on</strong> I.1. These short-term studies are also open to students hold<strong>in</strong>g a diploma <strong>in</strong> architecture, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

natural sciences or computer sciences which <strong>the</strong>y received at o<strong>the</strong>r higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s. The course programmes are<br />

completed with <strong>the</strong> presentati<strong>on</strong> of a diploma <strong>the</strong>sis. A certificate is granted.<br />

IAP<br />

In order to enter <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al cycle of studies, <strong>the</strong> studies for <strong>the</strong><br />

doctorate, <strong>the</strong> possessi<strong>on</strong> of a Master’s degree <strong>in</strong> philosophy, or its<br />

equivalent, is required.<br />

The doctoral programme is estimated to take three years (although <strong>in</strong> practice it may take l<strong>on</strong>ger). The programme <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

<strong>on</strong>e year or two semesters of courses designed to facilitate <strong>the</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> doctoral<br />

dissertati<strong>on</strong>. The programme of studies for <strong>the</strong> doctorate <strong>in</strong>cludes 24 credit hours (two semesters) bey<strong>on</strong>d <strong>the</strong> Master’s degree.<br />

Four credit hours are given for prelim<strong>in</strong>ary research <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctorate, <strong>the</strong> results of which must be presented orally <strong>in</strong> two<br />

doctoral sem<strong>in</strong>ars or Privatissimum. Admissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> doctoral programme is subject to approval by <strong>the</strong> rector and <strong>the</strong> faculty<br />

committee of <strong>the</strong> IAP, who ascerta<strong>in</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> applicant possesses <strong>the</strong> capacity for <strong>in</strong>dependent research, a necessary<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> for admissi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The required doctoral dissertati<strong>on</strong> must be an orig<strong>in</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> to knowledge. The f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> doctorate<br />

follows <strong>the</strong> completi<strong>on</strong> of all course requirements, <strong>the</strong> completi<strong>on</strong> of a doctoral dissertati<strong>on</strong> (approximately 200 pages <strong>in</strong><br />

length), approved by <strong>the</strong> director and handed <strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> director of studies.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists of:<br />

(a) an oral Rigorosum, a two-hour oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> rang<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong>mes from systematic philosophy and from <strong>the</strong> history of<br />

philosophy;<br />

(b) an oral, public defence of <strong>the</strong> dissertati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

It is expected that <strong>the</strong> dissertati<strong>on</strong> will be published as orig<strong>in</strong>al research.<br />

The Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. Phil.) is granted.
