No dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> is made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK between State and <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>al degrees as is <strong>the</strong> case elsewhere. Universities are empowered<br />

by royal charter or act of Parliament to award degrees. Institutes and colleges of higher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> award <strong>the</strong>ir first degrees <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> OU or a local university.<br />

The degrees of <strong>the</strong> sole British private university, <strong>the</strong> University of Buck<strong>in</strong>gham, are sancti<strong>on</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> presence of external<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ers drawn from public universities, as is <strong>the</strong> case <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> public universities.<br />

A dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> is made between academic and professi<strong>on</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s. The 250 statutory councils, <strong>in</strong>stitutes and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al bodies<br />

exercise vary<strong>in</strong>g degrees of <strong>in</strong>fluence over <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent of degree courses lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>s and to <strong>the</strong> qualify<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals to act <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>al capacities, such as doctors, dentists, lawyers,<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers, architects, pharmacists and so <strong>on</strong>. In this respect, <strong>the</strong>y act as <strong>the</strong> State does <strong>in</strong> some o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>European</strong> countries.<br />

In a number of fields, university studies give not <strong>on</strong>ly an academic degree but also a professi<strong>on</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>, for example<br />

medical, dental, and veter<strong>in</strong>ary sciences. In o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong> or specialisati<strong>on</strong> is added <strong>on</strong> afterwards (e.g.<br />

law and (sec<strong>on</strong>dary) educati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

Degree courses can be grouped <strong>in</strong> a number of ways. The Official <str<strong>on</strong>g>guide</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1994 places <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g categories:<br />

agriculture and biological sciences;<br />

physical and ma<strong>the</strong>matical sciences;<br />

medical, dental and veter<strong>in</strong>ary sciences and allied studies;<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and technology;<br />

arts and educati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

languages and literature;<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess, management and social sciences;<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al and vocati<strong>on</strong>al subjects.<br />

The student can work for ei<strong>the</strong>r an h<strong>on</strong>ours degree or an ord<strong>in</strong>ary degree. The h<strong>on</strong>ours degree is a more specialised degree<br />

requir<strong>in</strong>g a higher level of performance and more time from <strong>the</strong> student. Many degree courses are categorised as h<strong>on</strong>ours with<br />

<strong>the</strong> student be<strong>in</strong>g awarded a pass or ord<strong>in</strong>ary degree when he or she fails to make h<strong>on</strong>ours standard. In <strong>the</strong> case of illness or<br />

absence, dist<strong>in</strong>guished course work may, <strong>in</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong>al cases, be rewarded with an aegrotat degree.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number of degrees now follow a modular structure. Most degrees are s<strong>in</strong>gle, jo<strong>in</strong>t or comb<strong>in</strong>ed h<strong>on</strong>ours, which<br />

reflects <strong>the</strong>ir specialised or <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary focus, and graded first class, sec<strong>on</strong>d class (divisi<strong>on</strong> 1 or 2), third class or pass to<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicate <strong>the</strong> level of <strong>the</strong> student’s performance. (A good h<strong>on</strong>ours degree — i.e. first or sec<strong>on</strong>d class — is often required for<br />

entry to higher degree study or to <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>s.)<br />

University educati<strong>on</strong>, which can be divided <strong>in</strong>to undergraduate and postgraduate studies, is c<strong>on</strong>cluded with <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

degrees:<br />

Undergraduate programmes: <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s degree<br />

<strong>the</strong> Master’s degree (Scotland)
