Organisation of courses of study The university sector The academic year at the universities is divided into two semesters: the autumn semester from September to December and the spring semester from February to May/June, January and June being examination periods. Students have a week’s holiday in October, at Christmas and at Easter. The multifaculty and the specialised universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. Certain institutions offer a few shorter intermediate courses, each of which constitutes the first stage of a degree course. For a more detailed description see II.2.2 and II.2.3. Danish higher education leaves students free to exercise their own initiative. Besides attending traditional lectures, they study in small groups where they are expected to contribute actively. Part of their studies consists of independent project and research work.
