Lycées<br />

Lycées are sec<strong>on</strong>dary schools which offer tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> baccalauréat. There are general and technical schools and<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are vocati<strong>on</strong>al schools. Some sec<strong>on</strong>dary schools have a secti<strong>on</strong> de techniciens supérieurs (STS) which offers technical<br />

programmes lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> brevet de technicien supérieur (BTS) and <strong>the</strong> preparatory classes for <strong>the</strong> entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s of<br />

<strong>the</strong> grandes écoles (CPGE). There are approximately 600 preparatory classes <strong>in</strong> lycées <strong>in</strong> different regi<strong>on</strong>s of France.<br />

Magistère<br />

This is a university degree accredited by <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istère de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche, which represents<br />

successful completi<strong>on</strong> of a three-year <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary course of study after <strong>the</strong> first university cycle (DEUG or DUT); this<br />

course has not changed s<strong>in</strong>ce 1990.<br />

Maîtrise<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al degree awarded up<strong>on</strong> successful completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d year of <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d university cycle.<br />

Module<br />

First and sec<strong>on</strong>d cycle university programmes are organised accord<strong>in</strong>g to a course credit transfer system (modules) applied at<br />

many universities s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 1993/94 academic year.<br />

Titre<br />

These degrees are diplomas recognised by <strong>the</strong> government and related to a specific professi<strong>on</strong> (for example, <strong>the</strong> titre<br />

d’<strong>in</strong>génieur or <strong>the</strong> titre de docteur en médec<strong>in</strong>e). The holder of a degree must be able to prove that he or she was awarded <strong>the</strong><br />

said degree by a State-accredited <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Unité de valeur<br />

Credits are proof of <strong>the</strong> successful completi<strong>on</strong> of semester or year-l<strong>on</strong>g courses <strong>in</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r compulsory or elective subjects.
