Regulati<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> degree of BComm<br />

The Bachelor of Commerce may be awarded as a pass degree or with H<strong>on</strong>ours. Courses <strong>in</strong> all subjects are comm<strong>on</strong>, i.e. both<br />

pass and H<strong>on</strong>ours courses. Courses are based <strong>on</strong> a unit system. A unit c<strong>on</strong>sists of approximately 25 <strong>on</strong>e-hour lectures or <strong>the</strong><br />

equivalent. Subjects to make up 17 units are taken <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first year, 16 units <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d year, 14 units <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third year and<br />

12 units <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth year. A schematic outl<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> overall programme of study is given below.<br />

First year: first university exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> commerce<br />

To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Commerce for <strong>the</strong> programme of study lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> degree of Bachelor of Commerce an<br />

applicant must have matriculated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Commerce.<br />

To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> first university exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> commerce a student must have satisfactorily attended, for at least three<br />

terms (i.e. <strong>the</strong> first year), <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g courses compris<strong>in</strong>g 14 units.<br />

Compulsory:<br />

account<strong>in</strong>g I, <strong>the</strong> market ec<strong>on</strong>omy, pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of ec<strong>on</strong>omic analysis,<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess communicati<strong>on</strong> skills, <strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> to bus<strong>in</strong>ess law,<br />

sociology, ma<strong>the</strong>matics for bus<strong>in</strong>ess, foundati<strong>on</strong>s of public adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> I, bus<strong>in</strong>ess statistics.<br />

Opti<strong>on</strong>al:<br />

One course must be selected from:<br />

English, German, French, Italian, Spanish (A) or (B).<br />

Selecti<strong>on</strong> of courses:<br />

The selecti<strong>on</strong> of any language course is c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head of Department c<strong>on</strong>cerned be<strong>in</strong>g satisfied that <strong>the</strong> student is<br />

capable of benefit<strong>in</strong>g by attendance at that course.<br />

Two-year rule:<br />

A student must pass <strong>the</strong> first university exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> commerce with<strong>in</strong> two academic years from <strong>the</strong> date of enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

faculty.<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>d year: sec<strong>on</strong>d university exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> commerce<br />

No student may register for <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d year programme of study until <strong>the</strong> first university exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> commerce has been<br />

passed.<br />

To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> a student must have satisfactorily attended, for at least three terms (i.e. sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

year), <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g course compris<strong>in</strong>g 14 units.<br />

Compulsory:<br />

account<strong>in</strong>g II, bus<strong>in</strong>ess f<strong>in</strong>ance, ec<strong>on</strong>omics of enterprise,<br />

<strong>the</strong> law of bus<strong>in</strong>ess transacti<strong>on</strong>s, organisati<strong>on</strong>al behaviour,<br />

<strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> to food bus<strong>in</strong>ess management and market<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

MIS I — <strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> to management <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> systems,
