I.3. Organisati<strong>on</strong> of courses of study<br />

The university sector<br />

The academic year at <strong>the</strong> universities is divided <strong>in</strong>to two semesters: <strong>the</strong> autumn semester from September to December and<br />

<strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g semester from February to May/June, January and June be<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

periods. Students have a week’s holiday <strong>in</strong> October, at Christmas and at Easter.<br />

The multifaculty and <strong>the</strong> specialised universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. Certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

offer a few shorter <strong>in</strong>termediate courses, each of which c<strong>on</strong>stitutes <strong>the</strong> first stage of a degree course. For a more detailed<br />

descripti<strong>on</strong> see II.2.2 and II.2.3.<br />

Danish higher educati<strong>on</strong> leaves students free to exercise <strong>the</strong>ir own <strong>in</strong>itiative. Besides attend<strong>in</strong>g traditi<strong>on</strong>al lectures, <strong>the</strong>y study<br />

<strong>in</strong> small groups where <strong>the</strong>y are expected to c<strong>on</strong>tribute actively. Part of <strong>the</strong>ir studies c<strong>on</strong>sists of <strong>in</strong>dependent project and<br />

research work.
