II.3.2. F<strong>in</strong>al university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Degree studies<br />

In recent years Denmark has adopted a somewhat Anglo-American structure by <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s and PhD degrees.<br />

Thus, a university course will normally c<strong>on</strong>sist of a three-year Bachelor’s degree course <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e or two subject fields which<br />

may be followed by a two-year course lead<strong>in</strong>g to a candidatus degree (Master’s degree). The study programmes for <strong>the</strong><br />

Bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong>clude project work corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g to a m<strong>in</strong>imum of two m<strong>on</strong>ths’ full-time work. Certa<strong>in</strong> programmes<br />

may be extended by a six-m<strong>on</strong>th professi<strong>on</strong>ally oriented module and thus last three and a half years. The programmes for <strong>the</strong><br />

candidatus degree nearly always <strong>in</strong>clude six m<strong>on</strong>ths to <strong>on</strong>e year’s work <strong>on</strong> a <strong>the</strong>sis. With<strong>in</strong> a few discipl<strong>in</strong>es (i.e. medic<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

pharmacy and veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e) <strong>the</strong>re are no Bachelor’s degrees but solely <strong>the</strong> candidatus degree after five to six and a<br />

half years of study.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>tegrati<strong>on</strong> of teach<strong>in</strong>g and research is a fundamental pr<strong>in</strong>ciple for all universities. This is meant to ensure high standards<br />

<strong>in</strong> all programmes.<br />

The humanities also offer a special six-year degree course (mag.art.) c<strong>on</strong>centrated <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e subject.<br />

The Bachelor’s degree and <strong>the</strong> candidatus programmes offered by <strong>the</strong> universities <strong>in</strong> Aalborg and Roskilde beg<strong>in</strong> with a <strong>on</strong>eor<br />

two-year basic course <strong>in</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r humanities, social, technical or natural sciences. The<br />

studies at <strong>the</strong>se universities are characterised by an <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary, problem-oriented approach.<br />

PhD studies<br />

Three years of supervised postgraduate studies after <strong>the</strong> candidatus degree lead to a PhD degree. A PhD degree is awarded <strong>in</strong><br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> recipient has successfully completed a PhD programme and by means of a dissertati<strong>on</strong> has<br />

dem<strong>on</strong>strated a capacity to carry out a scientific project <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependent applicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> scientific methodology of <strong>the</strong><br />

field <strong>in</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>reby c<strong>on</strong>tribut<strong>in</strong>g to research at a level corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al standards of a PhD degree <strong>in</strong><br />

that field.<br />

Danish PhD studies were restructured <strong>in</strong> 1993. The government lays down <strong>the</strong> overall framework of <strong>the</strong> PhD studies to ensure<br />

a general meas- ure of quality but it is left to <strong>the</strong> Danish universities to design <strong>the</strong>ir own specific PhD programmes, match<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> special competences, needs and traditi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> universities.<br />

Thus, each university has outl<strong>in</strong>ed its own specific PhD programmes which aga<strong>in</strong> may be divided <strong>in</strong>to a number of PhD study<br />

programmes that may all have <strong>the</strong>ir own particular requirements as to enrolment and course of study. The typical programme<br />

now c<strong>on</strong>sists of three years of studies follow<strong>in</strong>g a five-year candidatus degree or an equivalent degree.<br />

Individual PhD programmes must <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

a scientific project (i.e. <strong>the</strong> PhD <strong>the</strong>sis) <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependent applicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> scientific methodology of <strong>the</strong> relevant<br />

field;<br />

participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> research courses and sem<strong>in</strong>ars corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g to approximately six m<strong>on</strong>ths’ work;<br />

mobility to ensure <strong>in</strong>tegrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> two or more active research groups or networks. Mobility abroad is given high priority;<br />

experience <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g or o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>ds of communicati<strong>on</strong> of research results;<br />

defence <strong>in</strong> public of <strong>the</strong> PhD <strong>the</strong>sis.
