I.1. The <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

I.1.1. N<strong>on</strong>-university higher technological<br />

educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Technologika Ekpaideftika Idrymata (TEI) —<br />

technological educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Technological educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s were established under Act 1404/1983. They form a part of higher educati<strong>on</strong> just like<br />

<strong>the</strong> universities.<br />

Under this act and <strong>in</strong>ternal regulati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> TEI are self-govern<strong>in</strong>g. By law, such <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s fall under <strong>the</strong> competence of <strong>the</strong><br />

M<strong>in</strong>istry of Nati<strong>on</strong>al Educati<strong>on</strong> and Religious Affairs.<br />

The TEI are different from <strong>the</strong> AEI (University <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong>) as regards <strong>the</strong>ir role and orientati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

students, and also <strong>the</strong> subjects and qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>the</strong>y offer. Specifically, <strong>the</strong>y aim to:<br />

(a) provide sufficient <strong>the</strong>oretical and practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to enable <strong>the</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong> of scientific, technological, artistic and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

knowledge and skills to <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cerned;<br />

(b) educate resp<strong>on</strong>sible citizens, capable of c<strong>on</strong>tribut<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> demo-cratic process, <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omy, <strong>the</strong> social fabric and <strong>the</strong><br />

cultural development of <strong>the</strong> country;<br />

(c) profit from each Greek citizen’s right to free educati<strong>on</strong>, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s as provided for by law.<br />

With this objective <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong> TEI:<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tribute to <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>al tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g both of <strong>the</strong>ir students and of young people <strong>in</strong> general;<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> close l<strong>in</strong>ks with <strong>the</strong> relevant producti<strong>on</strong> units and with <strong>the</strong> organised branches of <strong>the</strong>ir regi<strong>on</strong>al ec<strong>on</strong>omies;<br />

collaborate with each o<strong>the</strong>r or with o<strong>the</strong>r educati<strong>on</strong>al or technical <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, bodies or services <strong>in</strong> Greece and abroad<br />

with a view to achiev<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> above aim;<br />

fulfil <strong>the</strong>ir graduates’ need for c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous educati<strong>on</strong> and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and provide a lifel<strong>on</strong>g educati<strong>on</strong>al opportunity for Greek<br />

citizens;<br />

<strong>in</strong>form <strong>the</strong> public about <strong>the</strong> degree of achievement of <strong>the</strong>se goals;<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong>ir aspirati<strong>on</strong>s with those of <strong>the</strong> AEI as provided for <strong>in</strong> Act 1268/1983 <strong>in</strong> a jo<strong>in</strong>t effort towards <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic development of <strong>the</strong> country;<br />

participate <strong>in</strong> research programmes <strong>on</strong> subjects c<strong>on</strong>cerned with technological applicati<strong>on</strong>s both <strong>in</strong> Greece and overseas.<br />

There are 12 TEI located <strong>in</strong> various parts of Greece. Many of <strong>the</strong>m have subsidiary campuses <strong>in</strong> neighbour<strong>in</strong>g cities:<br />

2. TEI Serres<br />

3. TEI Thessal<strong>on</strong>iki<br />

4. TEI Kozani and Flor<strong>in</strong>a branch<br />

5 TEI Larissa and (TEI Karditsa, TEI Lamia) branches<br />

6 TEI Messol<strong>on</strong>gi and (TEI Arta, TEI Ioann<strong>in</strong>a, TEI Karpenissi) branches<br />

7 TEI Chalkida<br />

8 TEI A<strong>the</strong>ns<br />

9 TEI Pireas<br />

10 TEI Patra<br />

11 TEI Iraklio and TEI Chania branch<br />

12 TEI Kalamata.<br />
