The requirement for entrance to <strong>the</strong> first year of <strong>the</strong> first university cycle is a baccalauréat or a diploma c<strong>on</strong>sidered to be<br />

equivalent, or a pass grade <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> diplôme d’accès aux études supérieures (DAEU). The universities usually organise, under<br />

<strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s stipulated by <strong>the</strong> order of 3 August 1994, two special university entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> DAEU A (literary)<br />

and <strong>the</strong> DAEU B (scientific). The first (DAEU A) allows students to enrol <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es: literature, arts, social<br />

sciences, languages, communicati<strong>on</strong>s, law, ec<strong>on</strong>omics, adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> and management; <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d (DAEU B) authorises<br />

enrolment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sciences, technology, physical educati<strong>on</strong>, medic<strong>in</strong>e, dentistry, pharmacy or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> paramedical sector. These<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s allow many young people and adults who do not have a baccalauréat to pursue university studies.<br />

Special cases<br />

The certificat de capacité en droit (legal scholastic aptitude certificate) is designed for students aged 17 or older without a<br />

baccalauréat. It allows those candidates who obta<strong>in</strong> a score of at least 10 po<strong>in</strong>ts out of 20 <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> series of tests to enter a first<br />

year university DEUG diploma law programme. Candidates with a score of 15 po<strong>in</strong>ts or more can enter <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d year<br />

programme.<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> different post-baccalauréat educati<strong>on</strong> programmes offered at <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s which come under <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istère de<br />

c<strong>on</strong>formity with <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s stipulated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> decree relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> validati<strong>on</strong> of studies, professi<strong>on</strong>al experience or pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

knowledge (Decree No 85-906 of 23 August 1985). Validati<strong>on</strong> enables <strong>the</strong> candidate to enter directly <strong>in</strong>to an educati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

programme lead<strong>in</strong>g to a nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma or degree which is regulated by <strong>the</strong> State, or to apply for <strong>the</strong> competitive entrance<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s adm<strong>in</strong>istered at a particular <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. Candidates who hold a foreign diploma or degree, for <strong>in</strong>stance, can also<br />

make a request for validati<strong>on</strong>. Validati<strong>on</strong> is decided by <strong>the</strong> president of <strong>the</strong> university or <strong>the</strong> director of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

proposal of <strong>the</strong> academic commissi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>in</strong>stituts universitaires professi<strong>on</strong>nalisés (IUP) is granted to students who have completed ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> first year<br />

DEUG diploma programme, <strong>on</strong>e year of preparatory classes for grandes écoles or a year of study after <strong>the</strong> baccalauréat. They<br />

must also submit a letter <strong>in</strong> support of <strong>the</strong>ir applicati<strong>on</strong> al<strong>on</strong>g with letters of recommendati<strong>on</strong> from two <strong>in</strong>structors.<br />

Selecti<strong>on</strong> occurs after <strong>on</strong>e year <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e, dentistry and pharmacy:<br />

c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued study is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> rank<strong>in</strong>g of scores <strong>on</strong> a general exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> is selective to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g professi<strong>on</strong>al maîtrise programmes:<br />

maîtrise de sciences et techniques (MST: science and technology);<br />

maîtrise des méthodes <strong>in</strong>formatiques appliquées à la gesti<strong>on</strong> (MIAGE: computer science applied to management).<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong>se maîtrise programmes requires that <strong>the</strong> student have a certificat préparatoire (preparatory certificate)<br />

which certifies his or her completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> preparatory courses prepared jo<strong>in</strong>tly with <strong>the</strong> DEUG diploma.<br />

After four years, students who have obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> degree of maîtrise may wish to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong>ir study <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong> of a<br />

diplôme d’études<br />

spéciales supérieures (DESS) or a diplôme d’études approf<strong>on</strong>dies (DEA), which represents <strong>the</strong> first year of preparati<strong>on</strong> of a<br />

doctoral degree. Permissi<strong>on</strong> to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue study is granted by <strong>the</strong> president of <strong>the</strong> university accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> student’s<br />

dem<strong>on</strong>strated merit, particularly dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> maîtrise programme.<br />

Short-term higher educati<strong>on</strong> programmes<br />

Selecti<strong>on</strong> is made as so<strong>on</strong> as a student has obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> baccalauréat. This is d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituts universitaires de<br />

technologie by means of a formal applicati<strong>on</strong> submitted to a selecti<strong>on</strong> committee. Admissi<strong>on</strong> is announced after <strong>the</strong> scores of<br />

<strong>the</strong> baccalauréat exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> have been reviewed by <strong>the</strong> selecti<strong>on</strong> committee; or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of paramedical programmes, by<br />

means of a very selective entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> which is normally accompanied by an <strong>in</strong>terview and by physical and<br />

psychological aptitude tests.
