University degrees and study atta<strong>in</strong>ments are recognised throughout <strong>the</strong> country. Because of <strong>the</strong>ir aut<strong>on</strong>omy, universities<br />

decide <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>take of students accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir resources. In basic educati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re are agreements <strong>on</strong> transfer<br />

between <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, as well as quotas for students who want to <strong>in</strong>clude studies or modules from ano<strong>the</strong>r university <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

degree. For admissi<strong>on</strong> to doctoral studies, <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal requirement is a higher academic degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same field, or an<br />

equivalent foreign degree; a good grade <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> major subject is generally required.<br />

The universities may also accept a degree taken <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r field, if <strong>the</strong> pers<strong>on</strong> is found to have <strong>the</strong> knowledge and ability<br />

required for <strong>the</strong> doctoral studies. If <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> deems a degree deficient <strong>in</strong> some respects, <strong>the</strong> student may have to take<br />

complementary studies before commerc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course.<br />

N<strong>on</strong>-university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

AMK degrees were planned to provide an alternative to university degrees; <strong>the</strong>y are more clearly professi<strong>on</strong>ally oriented.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> holders of <strong>the</strong>se degrees can apply to universities; universities devise <strong>the</strong>ir own selecti<strong>on</strong> procedure.<br />

The units for adult educati<strong>on</strong> at AMK <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s provide fur<strong>the</strong>r educati<strong>on</strong> for those holders of higher vocati<strong>on</strong>al diplomas<br />

who want to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong>ir studies for an AMK degree. The paths from o<strong>the</strong>r vocati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong> to AMK <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

universities were described <strong>in</strong> II.1.1 and II.1.2.
