I.2.3. Classes and academic year<br />

Courses are held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of lectures, sem<strong>in</strong>ars, exercise courses,<br />

practical courses and field trips. In lectures, <strong>the</strong> lecturer presents <strong>the</strong><br />

material to <strong>the</strong> students and does not generally enter <strong>in</strong>to discussi<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong>m. It is quite comm<strong>on</strong> for lectures to be attended<br />

by more than 400 students. Generally speak<strong>in</strong>g, attendance of a lecture is not ‘certified’, but <strong>in</strong> some subjects written<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are held at <strong>the</strong> end of lecture courses.<br />

In all o<strong>the</strong>r forms of class, active student participati<strong>on</strong> is expected. In exercise courses, generally speak<strong>in</strong>g, students practise<br />

<strong>the</strong> methods and skills required for <strong>the</strong> related discipl<strong>in</strong>es (e.g. statistics for psychologists, stylistics for philologists); <strong>the</strong>se<br />

courses are often used to c<strong>on</strong>solidate <strong>the</strong> material presented <strong>in</strong> lectures, which is discussed <strong>in</strong> smaller groups. Follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

successful completi<strong>on</strong> of an exercise course, a course certificate (Sche<strong>in</strong>) is issued to certify <strong>the</strong> student’s participati<strong>on</strong> (which<br />

may take <strong>the</strong> form of a written assignment and/or presentati<strong>on</strong> of a sem<strong>in</strong>ar paper and/or a written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

Similarly, <strong>in</strong> practical courses, especially <strong>in</strong> natural science discipl<strong>in</strong>es, experiments are c<strong>on</strong>ducted and analyses carried out<br />

etc. <strong>in</strong> laboratories. These serve towards practical student tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Sem<strong>in</strong>ars are often divided <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>troductory sem<strong>in</strong>ars (Prosem<strong>in</strong>are) and advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ars (Hauptsem<strong>in</strong>are). Introductory<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ars are <strong>in</strong>tended for beg<strong>in</strong>ners, and advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ars for students who have already passed <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Vorprüfung or Zwischenprüfung). In sem<strong>in</strong>ars students discuss particular issues relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir subject under<br />

<strong>the</strong> guidance of lecturers, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong>ir own work. Sem<strong>in</strong>ars thus serve as an <strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>in</strong>dependent academic<br />

work. Successful attendance is aga<strong>in</strong> certified by a course certificate. Besides <strong>in</strong>troduc- tory and advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ars, <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

also sem<strong>in</strong>ars for exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> candidates or postgraduate students (Mittelsem<strong>in</strong>are and Obersem<strong>in</strong>are); <strong>the</strong> titles of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ars def<strong>in</strong>e which participants are ma<strong>in</strong>ly addressed by <strong>the</strong>se specific courses. The term Blocksem<strong>in</strong>ar is used <strong>in</strong> an<br />

entirely different c<strong>on</strong>text: whilst sem<strong>in</strong>ar courses are usually taught <strong>in</strong> a prescribed number of classes (usually two) each week<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> semester, <strong>in</strong> block sem<strong>in</strong>ars several hours of classes are comb<strong>in</strong>ed (often at weekends).<br />

In some discipl<strong>in</strong>es lectures have to be complemented by observati<strong>on</strong> at first hand (e.g. <strong>in</strong> geography, art history). This takes<br />

place through field trips, which are often undertaken dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> breaks between semesters. Students often have to prepare and<br />

hold talks <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> particular objectives of <strong>the</strong>se field trips.<br />

The academic year is divided <strong>in</strong>to semesters. The summer semester runs from April to September, <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter semester from<br />

October to March of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year. Lectures <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter semester are usually held from early October/November until<br />

mid/late February, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer semester from early April/May to mid/late July. A period of three m<strong>on</strong>ths without<br />

lectures at <strong>the</strong> Fachhochschulen and five m<strong>on</strong>ths at o<strong>the</strong>r higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s allows students time to prepare for<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ars, undergo practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and sit exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

I.2.4. Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Students graduate from a degree programme ei<strong>the</strong>r by pass<strong>in</strong>g an academic exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> or State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> or, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ology, ecclesiastical exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. A candidate who has passed an academic exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is awarded <strong>the</strong> Diplom degree<br />

or a Magister Artium. Students who pass a first State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> usually go <strong>on</strong> to fur<strong>the</strong>r practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g outside <strong>the</strong> higher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In order to guarantee <strong>the</strong> equivalence of academic degrees and to enable students to move freely between higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> German Rectors’ C<strong>on</strong>ference and <strong>the</strong> Stand<strong>in</strong>g C<strong>on</strong>ference of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>isters for Educati<strong>on</strong> and Cultural Affairs<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Länder <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federal Republic of Germany agreed <strong>on</strong> general c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for academic exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s (Diplom<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s at universities and Fachhochschulen and Magister exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s). For <strong>in</strong>dividual courses <strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong>n<br />

complemented by framework exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s (Diplom exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s) or by c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s specific to <strong>the</strong> subject<br />

(Magister exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s). Framework exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s exist for 18 university courses of study.
