II. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s and diplomas<br />

The general entry requirements are <strong>the</strong> same for a degree course at a British university or college of higher educati<strong>on</strong>. The<br />

course requirements may, however, be different, mak<strong>in</strong>g it more difficult for a student to obta<strong>in</strong> a university place <strong>in</strong> a number<br />

of discipl<strong>in</strong>es. No qualificati<strong>on</strong> or diploma gives an automatic right to a place anywhere <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong>. Instituti<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

departments reserve <strong>the</strong> right to refuse a place to even <strong>the</strong> most highly qualified student. Admissi<strong>on</strong> to higher educati<strong>on</strong> is by<br />

formal, multiple applicati<strong>on</strong> through a centralised clear<strong>in</strong>g system. There are a few excepti<strong>on</strong>s to this (that is, <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

requir<strong>in</strong>g direct applicati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

II.1. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

There are no specific entry requirements for n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong> as opposed to university higher educati<strong>on</strong>. In<br />

both cases, <strong>the</strong> general requirement of three GCSEs and two A levels (advanced level) generally applies (see below for a<br />

detailed descripti<strong>on</strong>). This general requirement marks <strong>the</strong> boundary between n<strong>on</strong>-higher and higher educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

A dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> is, <strong>in</strong> fact, made between <strong>the</strong> academic requirements for enter<strong>in</strong>g universities and <strong>in</strong>stitutes and colleges of<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong>, but it is a qualitative, not a quantitative, <strong>on</strong>e and it is made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course requirements.<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> to a higher educati<strong>on</strong> course is <strong>the</strong>refore determ<strong>in</strong>ed by two factors:<br />

<strong>the</strong> general requirement;<br />

<strong>the</strong> course requirement.<br />

The general requirement<br />

The general requirement for admissi<strong>on</strong> to higher educati<strong>on</strong>, whe<strong>the</strong>r university, <strong>in</strong>stitute or college of higher educati<strong>on</strong>, or to<br />

any o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> which degree courses or higher nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma courses are given, is by any of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

<strong>the</strong> general certificate of educati<strong>on</strong> (GCE) and <strong>the</strong> general certificate of sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> (GCSE);<br />

<strong>the</strong> Scottish certificate of educati<strong>on</strong> (SCE);<br />

<strong>the</strong> BTEC nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma or certificate;<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al baccalaureate;<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> baccalaureate;<br />

an acceptable overseas qualificati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

maturity (age 21 plus) and relevant experience (but each applicati<strong>on</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>sidered <strong>in</strong>dividually and <strong>on</strong> its own merit).<br />

The course requirement<br />

It is not enough for <strong>the</strong> candidates to offer evidence of a good general educati<strong>on</strong>. They must also show that <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

adequately prepared to undertake high level study <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field or fields <strong>the</strong>y have selected. This is called <strong>the</strong> course<br />

requirement.<br />

The most sought after <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s and departments set high course requirements (for medical places <strong>in</strong> universities, for<br />

example) and also stipulate particular grades or marks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s taken. The more modest, less sought after,<br />

departments <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutes and colleges of higher educati<strong>on</strong>, as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> universities, settle for <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum general<br />

requirements, or someth<strong>in</strong>g less <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of mature students.<br />

The general certificate of educati<strong>on</strong> (GCE) and <strong>the</strong> general certificate of sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> (GCSE)<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>dary schools <strong>in</strong> England, Wales and Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Ireland offer courses lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> general certificate of sec<strong>on</strong>dary<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>. It represents 11 years of general educati<strong>on</strong>: six years of primary educati<strong>on</strong>, and five years of sec<strong>on</strong>dary, and is<br />

generally taken at age 16.
