Instituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong> take sole resp<strong>on</strong>sibility for evaluat<strong>in</strong>g a diploma for purposes of fur<strong>the</strong>r study; <strong>the</strong> candidate<br />

must submit a validati<strong>on</strong> request applicati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> or <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s offer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course of study he or she wishes to<br />

pursue. The decisi<strong>on</strong> to validate a degree or not is made by <strong>the</strong> president of <strong>the</strong> university, or <strong>the</strong> director of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong><br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>put of an academic committee. The candidate is <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong>formed of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al decisi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Holders of foreign degrees and diplomas can also benefit from <strong>the</strong>se measures. The M<strong>in</strong>ister for <strong>Higher</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

Research makes decisi<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> validati<strong>on</strong> of diplomas <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e, pharmacy and dentistry <strong>on</strong>ly.<br />

The French system allows students to transfer from <strong>on</strong>e university course of study to ano<strong>the</strong>r. The most comm<strong>on</strong> transfers are<br />

from short-term to l<strong>on</strong>g-term courses of study:<br />

<br />

from <strong>the</strong> DUT to eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and bus<strong>in</strong>ess schools and to <strong>in</strong>stituts d’études politiques (IEP);<br />

from general university programmes to technical or specialised<br />

programmes;<br />

from DEUG, licence or maîtrise to eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g schools, bus<strong>in</strong>ess schools, art schools, journalism schools, etc.;<br />

from DEUG to <strong>the</strong> special tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g year follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first cycle, which are offered at <strong>in</strong>stituts universitaires de<br />

technologie (IUT);<br />

from technology programmes to research programmes;<br />

from completed écoles programmes to third university cycles or doctoral programmes.<br />

Most eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g schools have made it possible for students to transfer to an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programme after <strong>the</strong>y have obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

a DEUG, a DUT or a BTS.<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> to an <strong>in</strong>stitut universitaire professi<strong>on</strong>nalisé (IUP) is possible at all levels, BAC plus <strong>on</strong>e year, BAC plus two years,<br />

BAC plus three years, accord<strong>in</strong>g to specific procedures determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> universities.
