II. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s and diplomas<br />

II.1. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

General admissi<strong>on</strong> requirements<br />

The general admissi<strong>on</strong> requirements for courses at Danish universities and colleges of higher educati<strong>on</strong> are <strong>the</strong> same, i.e. <strong>on</strong>e<br />

of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g four upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

general upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

studentereksamen — upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

højere forberedelseseksamen (HF) — higher preparatory exam<strong>in</strong>-ati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

vocati<strong>on</strong>ally oriented upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

højere handelseksamen (HHX) — higher commercial exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

højere teknisk eksamen (HTX) — higher technical exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> course<br />

The course lasts three years and is offered <strong>in</strong> two different l<strong>in</strong>es, a l<strong>in</strong>guistic and a ma<strong>the</strong>matics l<strong>in</strong>e. The curricula comprise<br />

compulsory core subjects and opti<strong>on</strong>al subjects at up to three different levels. Students also have to write a major assignment<br />

<strong>on</strong> a subject chosen by <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

Applicants must have completed 9 or 10 years of basic educati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g English from <strong>the</strong> fourth form and a sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

foreign language from <strong>the</strong> seventh form (German or French). They are admitted to <strong>the</strong> gymnasium <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of a statement,<br />

issued by <strong>the</strong>ir previous school, that <strong>the</strong>y are qualified, and <strong>the</strong> pupil must have passed <strong>the</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong><br />

folkeskole with satisfactory results <strong>in</strong> Danish and ma<strong>the</strong>matics — applicants for <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>guistic l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> English and German or<br />

French as well and applicants for <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> science.<br />

A total of 10 oral and written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s must be passed for a complete studentereksamen. Up to three may be passed after<br />

<strong>the</strong> first and sec<strong>on</strong>d years.<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> attendance of and under <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol of <strong>the</strong> teacher and an external exam<strong>in</strong>er.<br />

Students are given marks for <strong>the</strong> year’s work as well as for <strong>the</strong>ir achievements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> 13-po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

scale (see Appen-dix I). The average of <strong>the</strong> two sets of marks is <strong>the</strong> student’s exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> result. In order to pass, <strong>the</strong> student<br />

must have a m<strong>in</strong>imum average of 6.0.<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> preparatory exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> course<br />

The higher preparatory exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> course (højere forberedelseseksamen (HF)) is directed at young people and adults. The<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> may be taken as a full exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> after a full-time two-year course compris<strong>in</strong>g a nucleus of comm<strong>on</strong> core<br />

subjects, three opti<strong>on</strong>al subjects and a major written assignment. It may also be taken subject by subject after day or even<strong>in</strong>g<br />

courses, ma<strong>in</strong>ly for adults. For admissi<strong>on</strong> to a full-time two-year course directly after basic school, students must have completed<br />

10 years of basic educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

A full HF exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> requires oral and/or written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> every subject studied.<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> commercial exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> course
