O<strong>the</strong>r degrees awarded <strong>on</strong> completi<strong>on</strong> of study programmes of this length are not to be regarded as <strong>in</strong>termediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

but as f<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s, even if <strong>the</strong>re is a possibility to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue study<strong>in</strong>g. This is also true for <strong>the</strong> new högskoleexamen,<br />

translated as ‘Diploma of <strong>Higher</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong>’ or ‘University Diploma <strong>in</strong>...’.<br />

II.2.1. Academic recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>in</strong>termediate<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for purposes of fur<strong>the</strong>r study<br />

The <strong>in</strong>termediate degrees menti<strong>on</strong>ed above are given <strong>on</strong> completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> first stage of <strong>the</strong> study programme c<strong>on</strong>cerned and<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore cause no problem for recogniti<strong>on</strong> for fur<strong>the</strong>r studies. The degrees described as f<strong>in</strong>al degrees, however, may be<br />

partially or fully recognised for fur<strong>the</strong>r studies, depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir aim and character. For example, from <strong>the</strong><br />

högskole<strong>in</strong>genjörsexamen of 80 po<strong>in</strong>ts (University Diploma <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g/lower level), around 40 po<strong>in</strong>ts are recognised for<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>on</strong>g-term eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programme. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, studies for <strong>the</strong> högskoleexamen (80 po<strong>in</strong>ts) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

new system may be fully recognised for a kandidatexamen (120 po<strong>in</strong>ts) if <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> subjects is studied up to <strong>the</strong> 60 po<strong>in</strong>t level<br />

and <strong>in</strong>cludes a <strong>the</strong>sis of 10 po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

II.3. F<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

II.3.1. N<strong>on</strong>-university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Sweden has no n<strong>on</strong>-university sector, i.e. <strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong> system is not a b<strong>in</strong>ary system.<br />

II.3.2. F<strong>in</strong>al university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

In <strong>the</strong> system up to 1993, <strong>the</strong>re were around 100 study programmes lead<strong>in</strong>g to degrees ei<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d högskoleexamen på<br />

...-l<strong>in</strong>jen, fil. kand.-examen på ...-l<strong>in</strong>jen (= filosofie kandidat), juris kandidatexamen, teologie kandidatexamen , or <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

named after <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>y led to, for example arkitektexamen, bergs<strong>in</strong>genjörsexamen, civil<strong>in</strong>genjörsexamen på ...-l<strong>in</strong>jen,<br />

brand<strong>in</strong>genjörsexamen, <strong>in</strong>genjörsexamen<br />

på ...-l<strong>in</strong>jen, sjökaptensexamen, agr<strong>on</strong>omexamen, ek<strong>on</strong>omexamen,<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>ell ek<strong>on</strong>omexamen, psykologexamen, soci<strong>on</strong>omexamen,<br />

apotekarexamen, sjuksköterskeexamen, laboratorieassistentexamen, läkarexamen, fritidspedagogexamen, ämneslärarexamen,<br />

idrottslärarexamen, lågstadielärarexamen, mellanstadielärarexamen, musiklärarexamen, etc. The length of <strong>the</strong>se degree<br />

programmes varied from 40 to 220 po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong>imum requirements for, for example, a filosofie kandidatexamen (fil. kand.) or högskoleexamen på xx-l<strong>in</strong>jen were 120<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts with a major <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e subject giv<strong>in</strong>g eligibility for doctoral studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same field. The length of study programmes<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g to such a högskoleexamen or a fil. kand.-examen varied between 120 and 160 po<strong>in</strong>ts or more. Programmes lead<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

ek<strong>on</strong>omexamen (bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> and ec<strong>on</strong>omics) and soci<strong>on</strong>omexamen (social work) were 140 po<strong>in</strong>ts. O<strong>the</strong>r degrees<br />

<strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, agriculture, law, psychology, medic<strong>in</strong>e, dentistry, etc., required 180 to 220 po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

The system of po<strong>in</strong>ts (poäng) is based <strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>e academic year be<strong>in</strong>g 40 weeks. Successful studies with a workload of 40 hours<br />

per week should yield 40 po<strong>in</strong>ts per year. However, normally <strong>the</strong> students need more than four years to reach 160 po<strong>in</strong>ts s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

studies at a higher level, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis, tend to demand more time.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> 1993 Swedish higher educati<strong>on</strong> reform, a new degree system was <strong>in</strong>troduced where <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> goals, <strong>the</strong> length and <strong>the</strong><br />

right to award degrees are decided by <strong>the</strong> government. In this system <strong>the</strong>re are two k<strong>in</strong>ds of degrees: general and professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

degrees.
