The Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) may be obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> most fields of study at universities. The degree, which is ga<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

through research <strong>on</strong>ly, is generally not taken until six terms after <strong>the</strong> Master degree, but <strong>in</strong> special cases candidates may be<br />

permitted to take it six terms after <strong>the</strong> primary degree.<br />

A m<strong>in</strong>imum of three years’ study is generally required for completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> PhD degree, and candidates will be allowed six<br />

years from <strong>the</strong> date of registrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> which to complete <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>sis. The degree will not be awarded unless <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ers<br />

report that <strong>the</strong> work is worthy of publicati<strong>on</strong> as a whole or <strong>in</strong> part.<br />

The standard required for acceptance to <strong>the</strong> PhD is generally a high level of academic atta<strong>in</strong>ment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> primary degree and<br />

evidence of aptitude for research.<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> doctorates are awarded to candidates who have dist<strong>in</strong>guished <strong>the</strong>mselves by orig<strong>in</strong>al research <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir field.<br />

evidence of aptitude for research if <strong>the</strong>y wish to register for <strong>the</strong> PhD degree.<br />

In recent years, <strong>the</strong>re has been an <strong>in</strong>creased tendency for universities and <strong>in</strong>stitutes of higher educati<strong>on</strong> to offer <strong>in</strong>-service<br />

programmes,<br />

available to graduates work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> particular fields. Some of <strong>the</strong>se carry diploma or certificate awards, o<strong>the</strong>rs are n<strong>on</strong>-award<br />

courses.<br />

It may also be possible for graduates to tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> various professi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

There are no State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, and various professi<strong>on</strong>als — doctors, dentists, veter<strong>in</strong>ary surge<strong>on</strong>s, pharmacists, etc. — must<br />

attend university and obta<strong>in</strong> a Bachelor degree (and <strong>in</strong> some cases a Master degree) before ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g formal entry to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Entry to <strong>the</strong> legal professi<strong>on</strong> is governed by two separate <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s: <strong>the</strong> H<strong>on</strong>ourable Society of K<strong>in</strong>g’s Inns (for barristers)<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Incorporated Law Society (for solicitors). Each <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> sets its own exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, and a Bachelor degree is usually<br />

required for <strong>in</strong>itial entry to both establishments.<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s for professi<strong>on</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> accountancy are provided by <strong>the</strong> separate accountancy bodies. It is sometimes<br />
