Courses are measured <strong>in</strong> semester units. The vekttall is <strong>the</strong> Norwegian term for a credit unit. The normal work load for <strong>on</strong>e<br />

semester is 10 vekttall, or 20 vekttall for <strong>on</strong>e academic year. Twenty vekttall equals 60 ECTS credits.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Arts, and <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Social Sciences, students c<strong>on</strong>centrate <strong>the</strong>ir studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e area at a time, and pass<br />

comprehensive departmental exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. The most comm<strong>on</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> levels required for standard degrees at <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

faculties are <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• semesteremne (semester unit) 10 vekttall, taken after <strong>on</strong>e semester of study (offered <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> some subjects);<br />

• grunnfag (foundati<strong>on</strong> course) 20 vekttall, taken after two semesters of study;<br />

• mellomfag (<strong>in</strong>termediate course) 30 vekttall, taken after three semesters of study. A mellomfag normally builds up<strong>on</strong> a<br />

grunnfag;<br />

• storfag (major subject) 40 vekttall, taken after four semesters of study. The storfag builds up<strong>on</strong> and <strong>in</strong>cludes a mellomfag.<br />

It is available <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> some subjects at <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Arts;<br />

• hovedfag (at graduate level), normally a four semester course after completi<strong>on</strong> of a cand.mag. degree and<br />

mellomfag/storfag <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same field.<br />

Embetsstudium is a five or six year professi<strong>on</strong>al graduate programme lead<strong>in</strong>g to a degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e specific field, i.e. law,<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e, dentistry, pharmacy, <strong>the</strong>ology, psychology, ec<strong>on</strong>omics and civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> Faculty of Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Natural Sciences, <strong>in</strong>dividual courses give vekttall. Courses normally count for between <strong>on</strong>e<br />

and five vekttall each.<br />

The university colleges have a different structure.<br />

Instructi<strong>on</strong> at <strong>the</strong> universities is given <strong>in</strong> various forms, depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject area. Lectures to larger groups are held <strong>in</strong><br />

auditoriums, while smaller groups and sem<strong>in</strong>ars meet <strong>in</strong> classrooms. Instructi<strong>on</strong> may also <strong>in</strong>clude term papers, field work,<br />

excursi<strong>on</strong>s and laboratory work.<br />

The Norwegian university system requires students to be <strong>in</strong>dependent. There are relatively few hours of lectures per week.<br />

Students are expected to structure <strong>the</strong>ir time outside lectures to <strong>in</strong>clude extensive read<strong>in</strong>g, participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> group work, and<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual study. Professors are available for regular academic counsell<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

I.4. Transfer of credits<br />

I.4.1. Nati<strong>on</strong>al credit transfer<br />

The universities, <strong>the</strong> university colleges and <strong>the</strong> college sector can all c<strong>on</strong>fer <strong>the</strong>ir own degrees, and programmes taken at <strong>on</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> must be fully recognised by ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> (i.e. 60 vekttall from an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g college will be given <strong>the</strong> same<br />

number of vekttall at a university). However, each of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s is free to determ<strong>in</strong>e whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>al subjects/exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s must be taken <strong>in</strong> order to qualify for a particular subject/degree.<br />

Until 1 January 1996, private <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s could apply to have <strong>the</strong>ir programmes evaluated by <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Commissi<strong>on</strong> (Nasj<strong>on</strong>alt koord<strong>in</strong>erende utvalg; NKU) which was an advisory board under <strong>the</strong> Norwegian Council of<br />

Universities (Det norske universitetsrad. With <strong>the</strong> implementati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> new Act of 12 May 1995 relat<strong>in</strong>g to universities and<br />

colleges, <strong>the</strong> NKU was disc<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued and <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Educati<strong>on</strong>, Research and Church Affairs are presently evaluat<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

organisati<strong>on</strong>al replacement for <strong>the</strong> functi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> NKU.<br />

The last NKU list of evaluated programmes and <strong>the</strong> evaluati<strong>on</strong> results (i.e. how many vekttall should be recognised with<strong>in</strong> a<br />

university degree) dates from October 1995.
