course is offered at some vocati<strong>on</strong>al schools and technological colleges which provide sec<strong>on</strong>d-level<br />

programmes.<br />

In general, <strong>the</strong> technological colleges require a leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate <strong>in</strong> five subjects <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g English and ma<strong>the</strong>matics, or<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> to a number of courses is competitive and a po<strong>in</strong>ts system may be used. In most colleges, however, <strong>the</strong>re may be<br />

II.1.2. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to university<br />

In general, admissi<strong>on</strong> to university educati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong> matriculati<strong>on</strong> certificate or certa<strong>in</strong> grades <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

certificate. In <strong>the</strong> colleges of <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al University of Ireland (NUI), all students who wish to register for a course of study<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g to a degree must hold a matriculati<strong>on</strong> certificate.<br />

Up until 1992 students could matriculate by tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> matriculati<strong>on</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. Students now matriculate <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> results of<br />

<strong>the</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

certificate or o<strong>the</strong>r equivalent exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. The leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate is<br />

<strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> which is most comm<strong>on</strong>ly presented for admissi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

universities and is acceptable to all colleges <strong>in</strong> this sector.<br />

Most <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> this sector operate a po<strong>in</strong>ts system for undergraduate courses. Places are allocated <strong>in</strong> order of merit <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

basis of qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al school-leav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. The best six results of <strong>the</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate are counted for<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts purposes. The maximum that can be ga<strong>in</strong>ed by a student is 600 po<strong>in</strong>ts ( 1 ).<br />

The po<strong>in</strong>ts system is particularly important <strong>in</strong> areas where a high number of applicants are compet<strong>in</strong>g for a limited number of<br />

places, such as medic<strong>in</strong>e, physio<strong>the</strong>rapy or pharmacy.<br />

Many courses also have special subject requirements; to qualify for admissi<strong>on</strong>, students must have passed, or obta<strong>in</strong>ed certa<strong>in</strong><br />

grades <strong>in</strong>, certa<strong>in</strong> subjects <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate or o<strong>the</strong>r exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. For <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> University College Dubl<strong>in</strong>,<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matics and a laboratory science subject are required for admissi<strong>on</strong> to courses <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e, veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e, science,<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, architecture, agricultural science, physio<strong>the</strong>rapy and radiography, <strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> normal requirements of Irish,<br />

English and ano<strong>the</strong>r language <strong>in</strong> order to matriculate.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong>imum entry standard <strong>in</strong> universities is a leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate <strong>in</strong> at least six subjects, with grade C or better <strong>in</strong> at least<br />
