<strong>European</strong> baccalaureate (EB)<br />

Courses lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> EB are offered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>European</strong> Schools — <strong>on</strong>e of which is situated <strong>in</strong> Culham <strong>in</strong> Oxford —<br />

primarily for <strong>the</strong> children of staff employed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Community <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s. The diploma is given at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> seventh year<br />

of study, <strong>in</strong> two or more languages, to those receiv<strong>in</strong>g 60% or more overall, <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous <strong>in</strong>ternal assessment and<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> wide range of subjects taken <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventh year.<br />

All higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s accept <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al and <strong>European</strong> baccalaureat for <strong>the</strong> purposes of <strong>the</strong> general entrance<br />

requirement. The student’s performance and choice of subjects will determ<strong>in</strong>e whe<strong>the</strong>r she/he meets <strong>the</strong> course requirement of<br />

a specific <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> or department.<br />

The BTEC nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma or certificate (ND or NC)<br />

The BTEC nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma or certificate is c<strong>on</strong>sidered by higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s as fulfill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> general (and<br />

sometimes <strong>the</strong> course) requirement for admissi<strong>on</strong> under certa<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s which vary from <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. These are<br />

that passes <strong>in</strong> three of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s should be high (at least 60%) and that <strong>the</strong>re should be evidence of a good<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g English language. Appropriate HND or C courses are required to meet <strong>the</strong> course requirement of some<br />

departments.<br />

Courses lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> diplomas and certificates of <strong>the</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess and Technology Educati<strong>on</strong> Council are offered <strong>in</strong> public<br />

sector <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s. Assessment is local and c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous and is moderated by BTEC.<br />

Scottish certificate of educati<strong>on</strong> (SCE)<br />

The exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> system <strong>in</strong> Scotland is different from that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom. In Scotland pupils take <strong>the</strong><br />

Scottish certificate of educati<strong>on</strong> at standard grade and higher grade which are awarded by <strong>the</strong> Scottish Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> Board.<br />

The standard grade, which replaced <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary grade <strong>in</strong> 1986, is taken at 16 plus. The exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is similar to <strong>the</strong> GCSE<br />

and has three levels of study: foundati<strong>on</strong>, general and credit. The standard grade awards are based <strong>on</strong> a seven-po<strong>in</strong>t scale,<br />

grade 1 be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> highest and grade 7 <strong>the</strong> lowest.<br />

The higher grade exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is a <strong>on</strong>e-year course cover<strong>in</strong>g a broad range of subjects and is taken at 17 years of age, after <strong>the</strong><br />

standard grade. Students take four to five subjects. The higher grade exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is often referred to as ‘highers’. In general<br />

terms, four highers are regarded as equivalent to two A levels. Passes <strong>in</strong> highers are required for entry to higher educati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The certificate of sixth year studies (CSYS) may be taken by a pupil who is <strong>in</strong> his/her sixth year of sec<strong>on</strong>dary school (age 18<br />

plus) and who already has a higher grade pass <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject(s) be<strong>in</strong>g studied for <strong>the</strong> CSYS. The exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> emphasises <strong>the</strong><br />

need for <strong>in</strong>dividual study and most subjects require a dissertati<strong>on</strong> project and report. In <strong>the</strong> CSYS <strong>the</strong>re are no pass or fail<br />

grades, just five grades from A (highest) to E (lowest). Candidates normally take up to three CSYS subjects.<br />

Students formally apply through <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g clear<strong>in</strong>g houses accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> type of <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>y hope to attend:<br />

Universities and Colleges Admissi<strong>on</strong>s Service (UCAS);<br />

Art and Design Admissi<strong>on</strong>s Registry (ADAR).<br />

The clear<strong>in</strong>g houses forward <strong>the</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s which make unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al, or c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al, offers or refuse <strong>the</strong><br />

applicati<strong>on</strong>.
