I.2. Number of students<br />

In 1995/96, <strong>the</strong> total number of students enrolled <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong> was 2 170 300. The distributi<strong>on</strong> of students <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> three<br />

cycles of<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong> breaks down <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g figures.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g this same year, <strong>the</strong> number of foreign students totalled 129 761. Some 35 944 of <strong>the</strong>se students were <strong>European</strong>, 27 799<br />

of whom came from EC countries:<br />

These figures do not take <strong>in</strong>to account students pursu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternships <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework of EC programmes (Socrates, Le<strong>on</strong>ardo<br />

da V<strong>in</strong>ci, etc.).<br />

I.3. Organisati<strong>on</strong> of courses of study<br />

The academic year<br />

The academic year runs from September to July. It <strong>in</strong>cludes two breaks of approximately 12 days <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter (end of<br />

December) and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g (beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of April). Universities plan <strong>the</strong>ir timetables <strong>in</strong>dependently. The specific vacati<strong>on</strong>s of<br />

each <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> are determ<strong>in</strong>ed by its president.<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

In <strong>the</strong> universities, <strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> a DEUG (BAC plus two years), a licence (BAC plus three years) or a maîtrise (BAC plus<br />

four years) diploma, written and oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s must be passed. The methods of evaluati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> student’s aptitudes and<br />

knowledge are def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> compliance with <strong>the</strong> 1984 law by <strong>the</strong> president of <strong>the</strong> university or <strong>the</strong> director of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> notice of <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>seil des études et de la vie universitaire (CEVU: Academic and University Affairs Council).<br />

Students are allowed to take exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g two sessi<strong>on</strong>s, two m<strong>on</strong>ths apart, generally <strong>in</strong> June and September. The<br />

programmes, except for law and ec<strong>on</strong>omics, are organised as modules or self-c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed groups of subjects, <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

facilitate orientati<strong>on</strong> of studies, <strong>the</strong> resumpti<strong>on</strong> of studies and part-time studies. Once a module is passed by <strong>the</strong> student, it<br />

does not have to be taken a sec<strong>on</strong>d time.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first and sec<strong>on</strong>d cycles, lecture courses, tutorials and practical projects <strong>in</strong> a given field make up a unité de valeur (unit)<br />

or a module. In <strong>the</strong> third cycle, <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> to grant a diploma is not <strong>on</strong>ly based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> grades of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, but<br />

also <strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent work and research.<br />

In n<strong>on</strong>-university <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, a c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous assessment system or annual exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s help to evaluate <strong>the</strong> student’s progress<br />

from <strong>the</strong> first year of study until <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al diploma is awarded. If a student fails an exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, permissi<strong>on</strong> to re-enrol is<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. Usually, a course of study <strong>in</strong>cludes an <strong>in</strong>ternship of about three weeks. A report or technical<br />

project is normally part of this tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This practical part of <strong>the</strong> student’s course of study is taken <strong>in</strong>to c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

grant<strong>in</strong>g of his or her diploma.<br />

Programmes and courses of study<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> educati<strong>on</strong> is based <strong>on</strong> short-term and l<strong>on</strong>g-term study courses. Short-term courses last two years and l<strong>on</strong>g-term courses<br />

three to eight years (m<strong>in</strong>imum). University courses are divided <strong>in</strong>to three successive cycles, at <strong>the</strong> end of which <strong>the</strong> student<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>s a nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma.<br />
