The subject areas must be completed by exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s which may be oral, written, practical or a comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Diplom<strong>in</strong>geniør, BS<br />

Diplom<strong>in</strong>geniør degree courses are offered at <strong>the</strong> Technical University of Denmark, at Aalborg University and at seven<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g colleges (<strong>in</strong>geniørhøjskoler).<br />

They are three-and-a-half-year degree courses giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> qualificati<strong>on</strong> diplom<strong>in</strong>geniør or BSc. All courses offered are based<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> same State regulati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

There are several fields of study: civil and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>al eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, electr<strong>on</strong>ic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g with computer science, electrical<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, mechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, producti<strong>on</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, naval architecture, chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, food science<br />

technology and export eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g (five years), and students normally enrol <strong>in</strong> a specific course from <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The aim of <strong>the</strong> courses is to provide students with both <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical and <strong>the</strong> practical knowledge required to practise as<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> diplom<strong>in</strong>geniør degree, it is possible to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue study<strong>in</strong>g for a fur<strong>the</strong>r two years to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

civil<strong>in</strong>geniør (cand.polyt.) degree. This degree is also obta<strong>in</strong>able through separate five-year degree courses at <strong>the</strong> Technical<br />

University of Denmark and Aalborg University.<br />

The diplom<strong>in</strong>geniør degree courses at <strong>the</strong> Technical University of Denmark have a modular structure. For <strong>the</strong> first four<br />

semesters, modules are compulsory as is <strong>the</strong> practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period. The latter lasts half a year and is usually taken dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> fifth semester.<br />

Class-oriented teach<strong>in</strong>g for groups of 25 to 35 students and laboratory project work <strong>in</strong> small groups form <strong>the</strong> pedagogical<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cept. In <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al semester students prepare <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al project, <strong>in</strong>dividually or <strong>in</strong> small groups.<br />

The first year of <strong>the</strong> diplom<strong>in</strong>geniør degree course at Aalborg University is comm<strong>on</strong>, after which students choose <strong>the</strong>ir branch<br />

of specialisati<strong>on</strong>. The course <strong>in</strong>cludes practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and <strong>on</strong>e semester’s work <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al project. Studies at Aalborg<br />

University are problem-centred and organised around projects.<br />

Curricula at <strong>the</strong> seven eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g colleges offer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> diplom<strong>in</strong>geniør degree course have a modular structure. Due to<br />

physical and<br />

geographical differences, curricula and pedagogical approaches are not identical at <strong>the</strong> various colleges. The first four<br />

semesters are comm<strong>on</strong> and based <strong>on</strong> classroom teach<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong>y comprise basic subjects for <strong>the</strong> chosen branch of<br />

specialisati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>the</strong>matics, physics and computer science. Half a year is spent <strong>on</strong> practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fifth<br />

and sixth semesters. A f<strong>in</strong>al project is produced dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> seventh semester. At some eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g colleges modules are<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed and shared by groups of students who do <strong>the</strong>ir project work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> groups. Up to 50% of <strong>the</strong> entire curriculum may<br />

be project-centred, thus emphasis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ory and practice.<br />

Oral and written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are held throughout <strong>the</strong> course. Most exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s have external exam<strong>in</strong>ers.
