III. Special types and forms of f<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong><br />

(a) Master’s courses<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong>ir aut<strong>on</strong>omy, Italian universities, both State and <strong>in</strong>dependent but legally-recognised, may run courses and award<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong>s different from those regulated by nati<strong>on</strong>al law.<br />

A few <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, for example, organise post-Lauream programmes which <strong>the</strong>y frequently call Master’s courses. Orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

modelled <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> British or US pattern, <strong>the</strong> Italian Master’s courses have been c<strong>on</strong>veniently adapted to <strong>the</strong> local situati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up and management of such degree courses, Italian academic <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s often operate aut<strong>on</strong>omously, but at<br />

times <strong>the</strong>y avail <strong>the</strong>mselves of <strong>the</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong> of outside qualified bodies. For <strong>in</strong>stance, c<strong>on</strong>sortia have been established<br />

between universities and <strong>in</strong>dustrial and/or commercial c<strong>on</strong>cerns with <strong>the</strong> purpose of jo<strong>in</strong>tly runn<strong>in</strong>g Master’s courses (or<br />

similar <strong>on</strong>es) which may better answer <strong>the</strong> market demand for young professi<strong>on</strong>als provided with both <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> and a more practically-oriented tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce all Master’s courses are subject to numerus clausus restricti<strong>on</strong>s, to ga<strong>in</strong> admissi<strong>on</strong> applicants must not <strong>on</strong>ly possess a<br />

related laurea (or an equivalent foreign qualificati<strong>on</strong>) but also pass a selective entrance<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Course length may vary from <strong>on</strong>e to two years. Attendance is compulsory. As for study c<strong>on</strong>tent, Master’s courses mostly<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cern such fields as bus<strong>in</strong>ess management, corporate adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong>, mass communicati<strong>on</strong>s, and so <strong>on</strong>.<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g alternates traditi<strong>on</strong>al university lectures with case-studies and o<strong>the</strong>r active methodologies.<br />

Even if <strong>the</strong> Italian Master’s degrees often enjoy c<strong>on</strong>siderable popularity am<strong>on</strong>g employers — especially <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with<br />

<strong>the</strong> private <strong>in</strong>dustrial and commercial c<strong>on</strong>text — <strong>the</strong>y have no legal validity <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al territory, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y do not fall<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> official university system.<br />

Anyhow, <strong>the</strong>y are generally well accepted <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> labour market as additi<strong>on</strong>al, more professi<strong>on</strong>ally-oriented qualificati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed after an official Italian degree.<br />

(b) C<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g university educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Italian universities — <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own or <strong>in</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong> with public as well as private enterprises with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> legal framework of<br />

purposely created c<strong>on</strong>sortia — are also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives of istruzi<strong>on</strong>e c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ua o permanente, that is to say c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

lifel<strong>on</strong>g educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

It seems important to specify that <strong>in</strong> Italy most activities c<strong>on</strong>nected with c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g educati<strong>on</strong> are set up and developed<br />

outside <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>al system, ei<strong>the</strong>r by <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>s or by private organisati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g educati<strong>on</strong> has fundamentally developed al<strong>on</strong>g two different channels. The first, which could be referred to as<br />

‘sec<strong>on</strong>d-chance educati<strong>on</strong>’, covers a number of <strong>in</strong>itiatives essentially designed to offer new educati<strong>on</strong> and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

opportunities to people who have previously had very limited <strong>on</strong>es because of def<strong>in</strong>ite social reas<strong>on</strong>s; it ma<strong>in</strong>ly c<strong>on</strong>sists <strong>in</strong><br />

courses for adult educati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> majority at sec<strong>on</strong>dary level.<br />

The sec<strong>on</strong>d channel is that of ‘c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g higher professi<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong>’, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g different types of educati<strong>on</strong>al offer<strong>in</strong>gs:<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are meant for professi<strong>on</strong>als who, already provided with a high degree of educati<strong>on</strong> and/or experience, need to update or<br />

extend <strong>the</strong>ir professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

competence.
