II. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s and diplomas<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g secti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a descripti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> entrance qualificati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>termediate and f<strong>in</strong>al certificates and degrees of<br />

<strong>the</strong> various <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong>, and a summary of <strong>the</strong>ir recognised equivalence.<br />

II.1. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

The diplomas most comm<strong>on</strong>ly held by pers<strong>on</strong>s admitted to higher educati<strong>on</strong> are sec<strong>on</strong>dary school diplomas, which are usually<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed through a f<strong>in</strong>al written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> after seven c<strong>on</strong>secutive years of studies at a lycée classique, a lycée technique or<br />

at <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> School <strong>in</strong> Luxembourg.<br />

The different diplomas are:<br />

<strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate of <strong>the</strong> lycée classique (diplôme de f<strong>in</strong> d’études sec<strong>on</strong>daires)<br />

<strong>the</strong> technical sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate of <strong>the</strong> lycée technique (diplôme de f<strong>in</strong> d’études sec<strong>on</strong>daires techniques).<br />

The <strong>European</strong> baccalaureate certificate of <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> School <strong>in</strong> Luxembourg and of all o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>European</strong> Schools abroad is<br />

recognised as equivalent to <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate of a lycée classique.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al school leav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is passed with a grad<strong>in</strong>g system from 0 to 60 marks, where 60 is <strong>the</strong> maximum and 30<br />

<strong>the</strong> pass mark. The marks for <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> baccalaureate, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, go from 10 (maximum) to 6/10 (pass mark).<br />

The recogniti<strong>on</strong> of foreign sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificates is based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> equivalence of<br />

diplomas lead<strong>in</strong>g to admissi<strong>on</strong> to universities, signed <strong>in</strong> Paris, 11 December 1953. Only <strong>the</strong> countries which have ratified this<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> can obta<strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong>ir sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificates.<br />

II.1.1. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Holders of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g diplomas are admissible to n<strong>on</strong>-university educati<strong>on</strong>:<br />

a sec<strong>on</strong>dary or a technical sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate<br />

a foreign sec<strong>on</strong>dary school-leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate recognised as equivalent<br />

a technician diploma (after evaluati<strong>on</strong> by a special board).<br />

A sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate is obta<strong>in</strong>ed after seven years of c<strong>on</strong>secutive and full-time study at a lycée classique. A<br />

lycée classique provides general educati<strong>on</strong> and its certificate gives university entrance to all subjects.<br />

A lycée technique leads to a technical school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate or a technician diploma after <strong>the</strong> same period of study. A<br />

lycée technique provides general and vocati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate, pupils take f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> seven or eight compulsory subjects. The choice<br />

of elective subjects is made earlier. This certificate is awarded <strong>in</strong> seven specialities:<br />

A1: ma<strong>in</strong> subjects: languages, human sciences;<br />

A2: ma<strong>in</strong> subjects: human and social sciences;<br />

B: ma<strong>in</strong> subjects: ma<strong>the</strong>matics, physics;
