and study periods <strong>in</strong> Denmark<br />

Academic recogniti<strong>on</strong> and credit transfer<br />

Students wish<strong>in</strong>g to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong>ir higher educati<strong>on</strong> studies <strong>in</strong> Denmark <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of a foreign academic degree or study<br />

periods at an educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> outside Denmark must apply for admissi<strong>on</strong> as well as for recogniti<strong>on</strong> and credit transfer of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir previous studies directly to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> where <strong>the</strong>y want to pursue <strong>the</strong>ir studies. The relevant<br />

studienævn (study committee) at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cerned decides <strong>the</strong><br />

eligibility of <strong>the</strong> student and evaluates <strong>the</strong> student’s degree of study<br />

atta<strong>in</strong>ments.<br />

Denmark has signed <strong>the</strong> Council of Europe and Unesco c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g recogniti<strong>on</strong> of diplomas lead<strong>in</strong>g to admissi<strong>on</strong><br />

to universities as well as c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> equivalence of periods of university study/university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s, and a<br />

Professi<strong>on</strong>al recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

N<strong>on</strong>-regulated professi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Except for a few regulated professi<strong>on</strong>s (see below), pers<strong>on</strong>s with foreign credentials may obta<strong>in</strong> jobs <strong>in</strong> Denmark <strong>on</strong> equal<br />

terms with Danes <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong>ir foreign diplomas. The potential employer evaluates <strong>the</strong> applicant’s credentials for <strong>the</strong><br />

job. Applicants with credentials which may not be well known <strong>in</strong> Denmark are recommended to <strong>in</strong>clude a comprehensive<br />

descripti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir educati<strong>on</strong>al background <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir applicati<strong>on</strong>. However, <strong>the</strong> level of a foreign degree can be evaluated by a<br />

Danish authority if necessary. This may be requested <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g ei<strong>the</strong>r directly to a higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> which offers<br />

comparable degrees or through <strong>the</strong> Secretariat of <strong>the</strong> Danish Rectors’ C<strong>on</strong>ference. Degrees <strong>in</strong> architecture and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Regulated professi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Diplomas from EU and EFTA countries<br />

A general system c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g mutual recogniti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong> diplomas for regulated professi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> EU and EFTA<br />

Denmark has designated <strong>the</strong> Erhvervs- og Selskabsstyrelsen (<strong>the</strong> Danish Commerce and Companies Agency) as coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with this directive can be obta<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> above agency and applicati<strong>on</strong>s for recogniti<strong>on</strong> should also be forwarded to <strong>the</strong><br />

agency (see Appendix IV).<br />

For professi<strong>on</strong>s for which separate directives c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g recogniti<strong>on</strong> apply (e.g. medical doctors, dentists, veter<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

surge<strong>on</strong>s, midwives and architects), applicati<strong>on</strong>s must be forwarded directly to <strong>the</strong> competent authority (see Appendix IV).<br />

Diplomas from o<strong>the</strong>r countries<br />

Applicati<strong>on</strong>s for recogniti<strong>on</strong> of diplomas for regulated professi<strong>on</strong>s from countries outside <strong>the</strong> Nordic and EU countries must<br />

also be forwarded directly to <strong>the</strong> competent authority (see Appendix IV).
