Postgraduate educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Postgraduate educati<strong>on</strong> is at present offered at <strong>the</strong> universities of Stockholm, Uppsala, L<strong>in</strong>köp<strong>in</strong>g, Lund, Göteborg, Umeå, <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Agricultural Sciences <strong>in</strong> Uppsala, <strong>the</strong> Royal Institute of Technology and <strong>the</strong> Karol<strong>in</strong>ska Institute <strong>in</strong> Stockholm,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Stockholm School of Ec<strong>on</strong>omics, Chalmers University of Technology, Luleå University of Technology and <strong>the</strong> University<br />

College of Jönköp<strong>in</strong>g. The pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Swedish system of doctoral studies is that <strong>the</strong> studies are systematically planned<br />

with courses and a doctoral dissertati<strong>on</strong> (doktorsavhandl<strong>in</strong>g). It should be possible to complete <strong>the</strong> doctoral degree<br />

(doktorsexamen) after four years of full-time study, but <strong>the</strong> average time is around six years. Each student is entitled to<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual supervisi<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> dissertati<strong>on</strong> is defended <strong>in</strong> public with an opp<strong>on</strong>ent (external exam<strong>in</strong>er), often from abroad. The<br />

dissertati<strong>on</strong> may be written ei<strong>the</strong>r as a m<strong>on</strong>ograph or as a so-called composite dissertati<strong>on</strong>, c<strong>on</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g of a number of<br />

published research papers and a summary. It is published and distributed to all universities.<br />

Apart from doktorsexamen (doctoral degree), <strong>the</strong>re is a licentiatexamen (licentiate degree), which is a research degree with a<br />

shorter qualify<strong>in</strong>g period: a m<strong>in</strong>imum of two years c<strong>on</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g of courses and a shorter dissertati<strong>on</strong> than <strong>the</strong> doctoral<br />

dissertati<strong>on</strong>. The licentiate dissertati<strong>on</strong> is defended <strong>in</strong> a sem<strong>in</strong>ar with an opp<strong>on</strong>ent. This degree was re<strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1980s<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> technical faculty, which is <strong>the</strong> faculty<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most licentiates because of <strong>the</strong> demand from <strong>in</strong>dustry. There was an older k<strong>in</strong>d of licentiate degree before 1972<br />

with different criteria from <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es menti<strong>on</strong>ed above.<br />

Scientific research after <strong>the</strong> doctoral degree may lead to <strong>the</strong> title docent, but <strong>the</strong>re are no l<strong>on</strong>ger special positi<strong>on</strong>s for docent<br />

holders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong> system.
