Teach<strong>in</strong>g terms<br />

In general, <strong>the</strong> academic year beg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>on</strong> 1 October and ends <strong>on</strong> 31 July. In courses organised <strong>in</strong>to semesters <strong>the</strong>re is a <strong>on</strong>e<br />

m<strong>on</strong>th <strong>in</strong>terval between <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> first semester and <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d semester. This <strong>in</strong>terval, which occurs<br />

generally <strong>in</strong> January or February, is used for <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> subjects of <strong>the</strong> first semester. However, no<br />

general rule exists because each <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> establishes its own calendar, which specifies lecture periods, dates of exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and holidays. At both Christmas and Easter, <strong>the</strong>re is normally a two-week vacati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g activities<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> characteristics of <strong>the</strong> course, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g types of learn<strong>in</strong>g activity may be comb<strong>in</strong>ed: lectures, sem<strong>in</strong>ars,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ferences, practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and study visits. Lectures may be <strong>the</strong>oretical, practical or a comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of both. Practical<br />

lectures may or may not be laboratory based. Theoretical lectures aim at <strong>the</strong> comprehensive learn<strong>in</strong>g of facts, c<strong>on</strong>cepts and<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />

The practical and <strong>the</strong>oretical lectures aim at <strong>the</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g of methods and <strong>the</strong> practical applicati<strong>on</strong> of c<strong>on</strong>cepts and pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />
