Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> old official regulati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> yearly assessment should be expressed <strong>in</strong> 10ths (same scale as <strong>in</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary<br />

schools: 0 to 10, with 6 as <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum qualify<strong>in</strong>g grade); as a matter of fact, however, most academies have gradually<br />

adopted <strong>the</strong> university grad<strong>in</strong>g system <strong>in</strong> 30ths, with 18/30 as <strong>the</strong> lowest pass<strong>in</strong>g grade.<br />

On completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> four-year course each student has to defend a<br />

written <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>on</strong> an art history topic: such discussi<strong>on</strong> forms <strong>the</strong> essential part of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al diploma exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Grad<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> diploma — which takes <strong>in</strong>to account all previous subject exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s as well as <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>the</strong>sis — may <strong>on</strong>ce<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> be expressed ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> 10ths or <strong>in</strong> 30ths, with 6/10 or 18/30 as <strong>the</strong> lowest pass grades.<br />

Diplomas issued by Academies of F<strong>in</strong>e Arts are exclusively academic qualificati<strong>on</strong>s. As such, <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> basic — but, <strong>in</strong><br />

certa<strong>in</strong> cases, not exclusive — requirements for access to certa<strong>in</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>s. In <strong>the</strong> case of teach<strong>in</strong>g, for <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

holders — provided <strong>the</strong>y also possess a maturity diploma — have additi<strong>on</strong>aly to pass <strong>the</strong> competitive State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

entitl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g positi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> public schools or <strong>in</strong>stitutes (<strong>the</strong>y may teach such subjects as art educati<strong>on</strong>, art<br />

history and design).<br />

Diploma di... (ISIA)<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are held annually <strong>in</strong> each discipl<strong>in</strong>e, students’ performance be<strong>in</strong>g graded <strong>on</strong> a 0-30 scale, with 18/30 and 30/30<br />

as <strong>the</strong> lowest and <strong>the</strong> highest pass mark respectively.<br />

Before sitt<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al diploma exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, students must have passed all <strong>the</strong> subject exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong>ir curriculum;<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong>y have to present a <strong>the</strong>sis each, normally c<strong>on</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g of a practical project.<br />

The diploma exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>volves <strong>the</strong> presentati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis and is graded <strong>in</strong> 30ths <strong>on</strong>ce aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong> is called diploma di..., followed by <strong>the</strong> specialised field of <strong>the</strong> ISIA c<strong>on</strong>cerned (e.g. diploma di disegno<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustriale, i.e.<br />

diploma <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial design).<br />

The Italian law attributes to any ISIA diploma <strong>the</strong> same legal validity as <strong>the</strong> licenza awarded by <strong>the</strong> Academies of F<strong>in</strong>e Arts.<br />

Diploma di educazi<strong>on</strong>e fisica<br />

The <strong>on</strong>ly State ISEF, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g teachers of physical educti<strong>on</strong>, is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e located <strong>in</strong> Rome. The o<strong>the</strong>rs are all legally recognised,<br />

as <strong>the</strong>ir study organisati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>forms with that of <strong>the</strong> State <strong>in</strong>stitute.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Article 19 of <strong>the</strong> new statute, <strong>in</strong> force s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> academic year 1990/91, <strong>the</strong> curriculum of <strong>the</strong> diploma at <strong>the</strong><br />

ISEF <strong>in</strong> Rome <strong>in</strong>cludes 24 subject courses, of which 19 are compulsory and 5 opti<strong>on</strong>al.<br />

Opti<strong>on</strong>al subjects may bel<strong>on</strong>g to three different areas (i.e. that of applied biological studies, <strong>the</strong> historico-juridical area, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> technical-educti<strong>on</strong>al <strong>on</strong>e).<br />

With reference to <strong>the</strong>ir more or less specific c<strong>on</strong>tents, subjects may be def<strong>in</strong>ed as basic (discipl<strong>in</strong>e di base) or specialised<br />

(discipl<strong>in</strong>e di <strong>in</strong>dirizzo). Basic courses may last <strong>on</strong>e or two years, whereas <strong>the</strong> specialised <strong>on</strong>es are always organized <strong>on</strong> an<br />

annual basis. Class attendance is compulsory.<br />

The different subject courses imply corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, usually <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g written and/or practical tests as well as oral<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews. Subject exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are graded accord<strong>in</strong>g to a 0-30 scale, with 18/30 as <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum qualify<strong>in</strong>g mark.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> three-year diploma course, <strong>on</strong>ly those students who have successfully passed all <strong>the</strong> subject exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

can take <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al diploma exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, ma<strong>in</strong>ly c<strong>on</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> defence of a written <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

Grad<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> diploma — all subject exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s as well as <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> are taken <strong>in</strong>to account — is based <strong>on</strong><br />

110ths, with 66/110 as <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum pass grade.
