John Palfrey & Urs Gasser: Born Digital. Understanding the First Generation
of Digital Natives (2008)
Das Buch von John Palfrey und Urs Gasser stammt
von angesehenen Wissenschaftlern. Palfrey ist Professor
der Rechtswissenschaft an der Harvard Law
School, Gasser ist Rechtsanwalt und Professor an
der Universität St. Gallen, Forschungsstelle für Informationsrecht,
und Forscher am Berkman Center
for Internet & Society der Harvard Law School.
Palfrey & Gasser, zumindest was die weltweite Lage
anbetrifft, durchaus der Fall: »The vast majority of
young people born in the world today are not growing
up as Digital Natives. There is a yawning participation
gap between those who are Digital Natives and those who are the same age,
but who are not learning about digital technologies and living their lives in the same
way.« (14)
Divide nicht nur in der »Separation between those with access to the network and
those without access. This is a persistent problem, but it's not the whole problem. The
harder issue arises when you realize that access to the technologies is not enough.« (15)
22 auf ihrer Website Digital Natives [http://www.digitalnative.org] am Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard
University beantworten sie ausdrücklich die Frage »Are All Youth Digital Natives?« wie folgt: »Simply put, no.
While we frame digital natives as a generation ›born digital,‹ not all youth are digital natives. Digital natives share a
common global culture that is defined not by age, strictly, but by certain attributes and experiences in part defined by
their experience growing up immersed in digital technology, and the impact of this upon how they interact with information
technologies, information itself, one another, and other people and institutions. Those who were not ›born
digital‹ can be just as connected, if not more so, than their younger counterparts. And not everyone born since, say,
1982, happens to be a digital native. Part of the challenge of this research is to understand the dynamics of who exactly
is, and who is not, a digital native, and what that means.« s.a. Palfrey in seinem eigenen Blog
