124 First Sunday in Lent<br />

TRACT (Ps. 90)<br />

The entire ninetieth psalm with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> verses eight to ten<br />

now follows. Each verse has an almost identical mediant f; if this sign<br />

appears twice in a verse, <strong>the</strong> mediant occurs twice also. Several verses<br />

have a caesura, indicated by (—).<br />

1. Qui habitat in adjutorio Altissimi,<br />

f in protectione Dei caeli<br />

commorabitur. 2. Dicet Domino:<br />

Susceptor meus es, f e t refugium<br />

meum, Deus meus (—): sperabo in<br />

eum. 3. Quoniam ipse liberavit me<br />

de laqueo venantium, ^ et a verbo<br />

aspero. 4. Scapulis suis obumbrabit<br />

tibi, f et sub pennis ejus sperabis.<br />

5. Scuto circumdabit te veritas<br />

ejus: f w°w timebis (—) a timore<br />

nocturno. 6. A sagitta volante per<br />

diem, f « negotio perambulante in<br />

tenebris, f a ruina et daemonio<br />

meridiano. 7. Cadent a latere tuo<br />

mille, f et decem millia a dextris<br />

8. Quoniam Angelis suis<br />

mandavit de te, t ut custodiant te<br />

10. Super aspidem et basiliscum<br />

ambulabis, f e -t conculcabis (—)<br />

leonem et draconem. 11. Quoniam<br />

in me speravit liberabo eum: t protegam<br />

eum, (—) qoniam cognovit<br />

nomen meum. 12. Invocabit me, et<br />

ego exaudiam eum: f cum ipso (—)<br />

sum in tribulatione. 13. Eripiam<br />

eum, et glorificabo eum: f longitudine<br />

dierum adimplebo eum, f<br />

et ostendam illi salutare meum.<br />

1. He that dwelleth in <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Most High, f shall abide in <strong>the</strong><br />

protection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> God <strong>of</strong> heaven. 2.<br />

He shall say to <strong>the</strong> Lord: Thou art<br />

my protector, f and my refuge, my<br />

God (—): in him will I trust. 3. He<br />

hath delivered me from <strong>the</strong> snare <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> hunters, t «wd from <strong>the</strong> sharp<br />

word. 4. He will overshadow <strong>the</strong>e<br />

with his shoulders, f ^nd under<br />

his wings thou shalt trust. 5. His<br />

truth shall compass <strong>the</strong>e with a<br />

shield: f thou shalt not be afraid<br />

(—) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> terror <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> night. 6. Of<br />

<strong>the</strong> arrow that flieth in <strong>the</strong> day, t <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> business that walketh in <strong>the</strong> dark<br />

f <strong>of</strong> ruin, or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> noonday devil. 7.<br />

A thousand shall fall at thy side, f<br />

and ten thousand at thy right hand:<br />

t but to <strong>the</strong>e (—) it shall not approach.<br />

8. For he hath given his<br />

angels charge over <strong>the</strong>e, f to keep<br />

<strong>the</strong>e (—) in all thy ways. 9. In<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir hands <strong>the</strong>y shall bear <strong>the</strong>e up,<br />

lest thou dash f thy foot against a<br />

stone. [The phrasing here is not<br />

happy.] 10. Thou shalt walk upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> asp and <strong>the</strong> basilisk, f ^nd<br />

thou shalt trample under foot (—)<br />

<strong>the</strong> lion and <strong>the</strong> dragon. [This verse<br />

has a proper middle and closing<br />

cadence.] 11. Because he hath hoped<br />

in me, I will deliver him: f / will<br />

protect him, (—) because he hath<br />

known my name. 12. He shall call<br />

upon me, and I will hear him: f
