St. Luke, Evangelist—SS. Simon and Jude, Apostles 459<br />

so accepted <strong>the</strong> invitation <strong>of</strong> Mary in today's Lesson: "Come over to<br />

me, all ye that desire me, and be filled with my fruits." The same Lesson<br />

closes with <strong>the</strong> words: "They that explain me shall have life everlasting."<br />

This promise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eternal Truth and—in <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Liturgy—<strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> God should be a source <strong>of</strong> inspiration and consolation to<br />

all singers. The opportunities to sing <strong>the</strong> praises and virtues <strong>of</strong> Mary<br />

are abundant. Let us make use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to show our ever-increasing awe<br />

and reverence for her exalted dignity as Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> God, and to chant<br />

with ever-renewed love and gratitude <strong>the</strong> praises <strong>of</strong> her whom <strong>the</strong> Lesson<br />

calls "<strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> fair love," who possesses "all grace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way<br />

and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truth.. .all hope <strong>of</strong> life and virtue."<br />

ST. LUKE, EVANGELIST<br />

(October 18)<br />

The INTROIT and <strong>the</strong> OFFERTORY are <strong>the</strong> same as those on<br />

<strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong> St. Andrew.<br />

GRADUAL (Ps. 18:5, 2)<br />

1. In omnem ten am exivit sonus 1. Their sound went forth into<br />

eorum: 2. et in fines orbis terrae all <strong>the</strong> earth: 2. and <strong>the</strong>ir words to<br />

verba eorum. t. 1. Caeli enarrant <strong>the</strong> ends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. $. 1. The<br />

gloriam Dei: 2. et opera manuum heavens show forth <strong>the</strong> glory <strong>of</strong> God:<br />

ejus annuntiat firmamentum. 2. and <strong>the</strong> firmament declareth <strong>the</strong><br />

work <strong>of</strong> his hands.<br />

This melody belongs to <strong>the</strong> type explained on <strong>the</strong> first Sunday <strong>of</strong><br />

Lent. Its first phrase and first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second phrase are very closely<br />

related to <strong>the</strong> somewhat freer form found in <strong>the</strong> first and second phrases<br />

in <strong>the</strong> first Mass for Christmas. The text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Offertory was explained<br />

on <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong> St. James.<br />

The ALLELUIA VERSE is <strong>the</strong> same as that on <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

James.<br />

The COMMUNION is <strong>the</strong> same as that on <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong> St. Matthias.<br />

SS. SIMON AND JUDE, APOSTLES<br />

This feast, occurring on October 28, is not celebrated on a Sunday<br />

if it is only <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second class, since <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong> Christ <strong>the</strong> King falls<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> last Sunday <strong>of</strong> October.
