440 The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary
From the first to the fourth double strophe, the melody has increasingly
greater intervals (fifth, sixth, seventh, octave). The quint at
the beginning of the second double strophe is especially happy. Likewise
the descent to c b\> a in the third double strophe.
FIRST PART
la. Stabat Mater dolorosa la.
Juxta crucem lacrimosa
Dum pendebat Filius.
lb. Cujus animam gementem, lb.
Contristatam, et dolentem,
Pertransivit gladius.

At the Cross her station keeping,
Stood the mournful Mother
weeping
Close to Jesus to the last.
Through her heart, His sorrow
sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Now at length the sword had
Oh, how sad and sore distressed
Was that Mother, highly blest
Of the sole-begotten Onel

She beneath beholds the pangs
Of her dying glorious Son.

Christ's dear Mother to behold!

From partaking in her pain,
In that Mother's pain untold!
Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled,
She beheld her tender Child:
All with bloody scourges rent.
For the sins of His own nation
Saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His Spirit forth He sent.
