max over Deus meus is obvious enough. This is really <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

melody: 0 God, Thou art my God. After meus a short pause is allowable.<br />

Everything strains toward fur<strong>the</strong>r development with in mdnibus.<br />

It seems but natural that / g a g a f (mdnibus) should follow d e f e d<br />

(Deus) and d e f g f e (meus). A slight secondary accent may be placed<br />

on <strong>the</strong> fifth note over md-(nibus). Quiet yet effective two-note groups<br />

thus make up this half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phrase.<br />

Included in <strong>the</strong> gifts which we bring to <strong>the</strong> altar is <strong>the</strong> oblation <strong>of</strong><br />

ourselves to God; we confide entirely in Him, and place in His hands<br />

both life and death, both time and eternity. There we shall be safe<br />

(W.K.). At a nuptial Mass <strong>the</strong> spouses similarly place <strong>the</strong>ir entire lives<br />

in God's hands, for this Offertory is also sung in <strong>the</strong> Mass Pro Sponso et<br />

Sponsa. And even if we are conscious <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leprosy <strong>of</strong> sin with which<br />

we are afflicted, we know for certain that to our suppliant cry, "Jesus,<br />

Master, have mercy on us," He will reply with His almighty word:<br />

"Arise, go thy way: for thy faith hath made <strong>the</strong>e whole."<br />

Special beauty attaches to <strong>the</strong> verses which formerly were sung in<br />

connection with this Offertory: (1) "Make Thy face to shine upon Thy<br />

servant; save me in Thy mercy. Let me not be confounded, O Lord, for<br />

I have called upon Thee." (2) "0 how great is <strong>the</strong> multitude <strong>of</strong> Thy<br />

sweetness, O Lord? Which Thou hast hidden for <strong>the</strong>m that fear Thee!<br />

Which Thou hast wrought for <strong>the</strong>m that hope in Thee, in <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> men." And each verse closed with <strong>the</strong> joyfully confiding refrain<br />

: In mdnibus tuis iempora mea.<br />

COMMUNION (Wisd. 16: 20)<br />

1. Panem de caelo dedisti nobis, 1. Thou hast given us, 0 Lord,<br />

Domine, habentem omne delecta- bread from heaven, having in it all<br />

mentum, 2. et omnem sapor em that is delicious, 2. and <strong>the</strong> sweetsuavitatis.<br />

ness <strong>of</strong> every taste.<br />

It is <strong>the</strong> Lord who has given us <strong>the</strong> Holy Eucharist. That is <strong>the</strong><br />

first thought suggested by <strong>the</strong> melody, which progresses almost stepwise,<br />

emphasizing /-/, g-g, a-a, c-c, until <strong>the</strong> word Domine surmounts<br />

it all. Pronounce <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> this phrase distinctly and see how well<br />

<strong>the</strong> chant follows <strong>the</strong> natural development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text. The Bread <strong>of</strong><br />

heaven hast Thou given us, O Lord! Only Thou wast able to give it.<br />

Thy wisdom alone could conceive such a gift; Thy love alone could bestow<br />

it upon us. In very truth, "Thy sustenance showeth forth Thy<br />

sweetness to Thy children," as <strong>the</strong> subsequent verse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong><br />

Wisdom puts it.
